A decent film about a man who discovers after his mother's death that she wasn't his mother at all. A good story about accepting your identity. It is a bit slow, though, and the film holds few surprises. Excellent casting of the two seasoned veterans Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones manages to elevate this film to a somewhat higher level. This also applies to the beautiful scene at the end when the birth is described. A narrow 3.5 stars.

Duvall and Jones were okay, but the star of this film is Irma P. Hall.

A powerful family drama that caught my attention thanks to the recently deceased Robert Duvall. He shines here from beginning to end as a small business owner from Alabama who discovers, after the death of his mother, that his biological mother was actually Black. Strong points of this film are that it never becomes sentimental or cloying, and that racism is present but hidden. Earl goes in search of his identity and acceptance, and that does not go smoothly. But the effort he makes by seeking out his half-brother and his family opens doors and hearts. After all, things are what they are and cannot be undone. Duvall and Jones play their roles with restraint, but I also found Auntie T to be one of the highlights of this film.
