Dee Brown's book was so impressive that I couldn't put it down, even though the content was not exactly cheerful.

However, it is a realistic account of the events at that time.

The film actually does the same and is equally impressive.

The book does discuss more issues and also goes into the problems in much more depth. It seems logical to me that you can't put that in a two-hour film.

Difficult to give a rating for this.

Currently 4.5*

HBO always knows how to translate great American histories into accessible and well-made television drama. 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' (2007) is made with respect to the painful history of the genocide and the role that the historical George Eastman played in the first emancipation movements. About the first 'Native American' who managed to complete a European medical study, but through this renewed position he becomes more aware of how Christianization is a systematic eradication of everything that is specific to the indigenous peoples. Adam Beach is okay as George Eastman and August Schellenberg delivers a compelling Sitting Bull. In itself it all looks quite cinematic for a television production. Yet it is somewhat static with choppy, theatrical dialogues and an exchange of ideas in which it is always clear who is most right in the discussion. A huge plus is that they avoid Indian mythology by emphasizing political upheavals and the human aspect. The cast also consists almost entirely of 'Native Americans' in leading and supporting roles. Pretty special.

Sober television film about the disguised mini-genocide of the Sioux community in the US. Despite the controversy, Burry My Heart at Wounded Knee doesn't really excite me. The build-up to the climax is rather slow and clichéd. Unfortunately, the permanent (sorry for my language) whining mouth of lead actor Adam Beach as 'Charles Eastman' also causes antipathy. Ultimately, the film is held up by the beautiful images and the charged subject.

3.0 * The book was better
