Another classic that proves that I'm apparently not a classic viewer, something I feared beforehand despite a promising start.
Gandhi is obviously a distinctive and charismatic person, something that captivates, and it does so for the first half hour to 45 minutes. His first experiences are rude, humorous and he shows that he doesn't favor anyone, not even his wife. His philosophies about faith and dealing with people are interesting. Unfortunately, after his return to India, the pace of the film completely collapses and degenerates into an endless procession of clashes, protests, entrapments, some violent counter-reactions in response and lots of political and administrative squabbles. The grandiose statues with many extras are of course great. In that sense, the enormous set-up of Attenborough is clear.
It is no wonder that Kingsley was awarded prizes, it is no surprise that the film was also well received so long ago. Almost comparable to The Last Emperor. It must, however, be of interest to you, such an iconic figure with the world problems of that time, otherwise this film is an unbearable seat. Nice for once, but it doesn't stick with me much.

Gandhi's mind.
Aside from the fantastic story of the mythical Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian hero who led his people to independence, it is Ben Kingsley who captivates the viewer during this three-hour epic. You can hardly imagine that people initially always had a white protagonist in mind. Fortunately, Attenborough's son saw the young actor steal the show on stage. Extremely charismatic, he plays the title role and actually becomes Gandhi. Later, acquaintances of the real star would call his film variant the 'Gandhi ghost'. Speaking of compliments.
The film would go on to win no fewer than 8 Oscars. Still, after about 30 years you can crack a few critical notes. Certain characters, for example, come out less well and towards the end the story deserved a little more explanation. But a knee ear that falls over it. As the filmmakers stated at the beginning of the film, 'it is impossible to capture a man's story in a film'. Still, this has become one of the most compelling film biographies of all time. Beautifully portrayed by the famous Sir Richard Attenborough and provided with Ravi Shankar's brilliant score.

The digital 4K restoration took quite a bit of effort, given that the original negative was quite damaged and dirty. In addition to the scratches, it turned out that chemicals had affected the film. The original 70mm film also featured a 6-track stereo mix that was upscaled to a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. This classic is also part of the Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection; a box set with 6 major films, a book and many bonus discs.
