La Caduta degli Dei (Götterdämmerung) plot

"He was soon to become the second most powerful man in Nazi Germany."

The head of a family of German steel barons is murdered in 1933 by an ambitious daughter-in-law and her lover, in order to take over the power that belongs to her weak-willed son by inheritance. However, the boy's personal vengeance and manipulations of a Gestapo cousin lead to the couple's downfall...

Another plus for the Criterion release: you can choose either the original Italian-spoken version (with English subs) or the English dub. It's a bit odd, though, to hear German characters speaking English with a distinct German accent (Helmut Berger, in particular, is sometimes difficult to understand; thankfully, the English SDH subs offer a solution).

Ha, a family from the noble elite (ic an aristocratic family in a steel empire), on the eve of a totalitarian fascist regime (ic the 1930s in Germany and rising Nazism) and the choices they make in response.

So far, of course, vintage Visconti (I even see his Capolavoro on the beautiful poster), but I'm not really impressed with the execution. More specifically, the film style (they call it "baroque," but to me, it's more kitsch or even camp).

Nevertheless, there are some nice historical scenes (Night of the Long Knives), but I have much more in common with other Viscontis.

I was actually struggling quite a bit with which dub to use with this international cast, but in the end, because of the subject matter, I chose the German one.

A magnificent work and, in my opinion, a masterpiece. It's a family chronicle of the Essenbecks, based on the Krupps during the Nazi era. It begins with a joyful event, Grandfather Essenbeck's birthday, but immediately sets a different tone with the brutal news that the Reichstag building in Berlin has been set on fire. The influential noble family and its steel company are swept up in the political events that dramatically impact the family's relationships. This is The Godfather in the 1930s, or it could also be compared to a grand opera from the Italian tradition.

As an audience, we are (mostly) aware of the Nazi atrocities, but seeing the brutality depicted on film certainly impacts the viewing experience. For example, there's the book burning, and we see a reenactment of the Night of the Long Knives. There's the framework of the political events, but within that, all sorts of personal tragedies emerge. That makes this fascinating and gruesome piece of history very human.

The actors are top-notch, the production is beautiful with appropriately opulent sets, and the direction is excellent. Maurice Jarre's score is functional and rather unobtrusive, which is perfectly fine.
