The Barefoot Contessa plot
"The world's most beautiful animal!"
The story begins with the funeral of Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner). In a series of flashbacks, commented via voice-overs by three different characters who are all present at her funeral, the story of her rise and fall is told. One of the narrators is Harry Dawes (Humphrey Bogart). He believed in her ever since he saw her dancing barefoot in a nightclub.

As Gilda is for Rita Hayworth, this is in my opinion Ava Gardner's ultimate film, partly inspired by events from both her own life and also from Hayworth's life. Just like the latter, Ava Gardner has never relied on her acting talent, but on her sexy appearance and that is abundantly present in this film, of which she is the radiant center. That is also the main merit of this film, which does not reach the level of other films by director Mankiewicz. Even Humphrey Bogart can't do much to change that, partly due to the fact that he doesn't really have much to do other than comment occasionally.

A film with the necessary potential, but which does not quite reach its full potential. It is a bit long so that the dynamics disappear from the film. And I'm a huge fan of Technicolor, but here it might have been better in black and white. The chemistry between Ava Gardner and Humphrey Bogart is also not good. Bogart didn't think much of Gardner. On the other hand, both are doing well, they are two professional Hollywood stars.
The Barefoot Contessa is about the rise & fall of a beautiful woman who becomes a movie star, but at the same time tries to follow her heart. The story is secondary to the beauty of Ava Gardner, on which the film relies a little too much.
