The film is outdated and I didn't immediately connect with the characters. But the story is still there and visually the film certainly has its moments. I like these kinds of movies. The hideous poster with more text than images does not immediately invite you to look up the film. Fans of Kurosawa will also enjoy this.

About the same level as Tales of Ugetsu. This time without supernatural elements, but still oppressive and compelling until the bittersweet ending. The fact that life is a struggle is emphasized in a confrontational way in this 'Jidaigeki'. It is a story about medieval (in)justice, self-sacrifice, individualism and redemption in which the children of a stubborn governor end up in slavery. Mizoguchi clearly takes the time to explain the story and creates an occasionally dreamy atmosphere that enhances the fable. The camera work is also surprisingly good, with many crane shots and long takes that center the characters and try to involve the audience with the images. The acting is generally subdued and in line with the gloomy/fatalistic undertone. Digestible, if somewhat drawn out.

More than a solid medieval family epic from Japan again. Many farmers of that time suffered much injustice and misery. If you, as an authority figure, tumble from your pedestal, no one is safe. Tamaki's family is torn apart. She becomes a prostitute, the children become slaves and the father stays behind. Nothing more was heard of the latter.

The plot is easy to follow. Well shot too, all calling for revenge, but this is not a revenge film, but a rather serene portrait of drawn children. Some overacting at times, but that is at the same time compensated by the setting of the reeds and the water.

Not a masterpiece, but I remained fascinated watching the film with some excellent scenes such as the flight, the capture and ultimately the escape.
