The Negotiator plot

"He frees hostages for a living. Now he's taking hostages to survive."

After successfully completing yet another assignment, police negotiator Danny Roman (Samuel L. Jackson) is adored by colleagues and the press. That evening, his partner tells him that he has evidence of fraud in the police department. When he later arrives at their meeting place at the appointed time, Danny's partner is found to have been murdered. The acclaimed policeman is promptly charged with the murder. He makes his way to Internal Affairs and demands the full truth from their chief, Terence Niebaum (JT Walsh). The conversation spirals out of control and Danny takes Niebaum and the three other people hostage. Knowing better than anyone how the police handle such situations, he enlists the help of an outsider: another negotiator, Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey)...

“When your friends betray you, sometimes the only people you can trust are strangers.”

Rock solid thriller. The film doesn't really do much new or original, but the execution is spot on. Samuel L . Jackson is (wrongly?) charged with murder and wants justice. That means taking a number of people hostage to find out the truth.

Chilling tension follows with some sublime action scenes. Because there are some people who would rather see Jackson dead than alive. Kevin Spacey is the negotiator and he is also excellent. The interaction with Jackson provides a number of highlights in the film. The ending is well done and the twist was quite surprising. Again, The Negotiater doesn't bring much new under the sun, but that doesn't matter when everything comes together so perfectly.

The Negotiator is in itself a decent film with good dialogues and good plot. So, at first glance, it doesn't seem to notice anything. However, I personally found it so easy and a bit boring. Boring because it all seems that way. Jackson's bombastic role is largely the basis here, in my opinion. You've got to love it.
