Clerks II plot

"With no power comes no responsibility."

After a fire at the Quick Stop, Randal and Dante (Jeff Anderson and Brian O'Halloran) are forced to look for a new job. It will be Mooby's, one of the many fast food restaurants in New Jersey. They are assisted by the faithful Elias and manager Becky. While Randal still refuses to grow up, Dante finally seems settled. He's ready to say goodbye to his 'McJob', marry his girlfriend Emma (Jennifer Schwalbach-Smith) and start a new life in Florida as a car wash owner. But the day doesn't go the way Dante would have liked...

Clerks 2 is primarily a professional, updated version of the original Clerks. It is immediately noticeable that everything has been made much more professionally, and that the budget was somewhat larger than with the original part. Nice opening, which goes from black and white to color, and thus makes a nice link to part 1.

We see the same characters, and a number of new ones, who again lead the same kind of life as they did in part 1. Despite the years gone by and the accompanying weight gain, they are not a step further in their lives. Randall even seems to still be living at home. Their lives no longer consist of video stores and quick stops, but it is now the local burger joint where they can play their jokes. Those jokes are of the same cloth, so humor about sex and movies, with a bit of racism here and there.

The moral from part 1 (take responsibility for your own life) is also nicely tapped here. Their loser life is only fun within their own little world. When a former classmate comes to rub in on his success, it becomes all the more clear how little these boys make of their lives, despite their ambitions in various areas. But apart from the somewhat sentimental story in the prison, the film retains its humor, although it does get a bit out of hand here and there (the musical piece with playbacking Silent Bob, and that donkey.. . was that really necessary?)

Both Clerks 1 and 2 remain pleasant viewing experiences. The coarse, light humour, the many references to pop culture and the recognizable, problem-free locations provide a pleasant feel-good atmosphere. This hanging of these eternal adolescents remains a joy to watch.

Good film in which the employee of the convenience store goes to work at a fast food restaurant. Despite the higher budget (which is not only visible because of the use of color) this sequel still comes across as fresh. It also has a bit more plot formation and the humor is sometimes a bit flatter. But there is still plenty to laugh about and some dialogues are also funny.

First part not seen, no sense in forced "art" with that black and white nonsense. Perhaps this film arouses some sentiment for those who have seen the first part, but I found it all quite disappointing myself. Here and there some successful jokes but in general very bland to cringe-inducing.
