Fear and Loathing reminds me of that one crazy 'friend' who always tries to be as fun and funny as possible at parties. In vain of course, because actually he only makes a big fool of himself and everyone is peeping at his bumbling with substitute genes. In the most positive case, the pathetic drunk is so exhausted after about half an hour that he sinks through his hooves and is removed by a few empathetic bystanders.

But you don't have to expect that with Fear and Loathing, because Depp and Del Toro just keep on pouring out bland adolescent nonsense and the most forced (failed) attempts at 'wackiness' for two hours. And it's not even that I don't like trippy, LSD-like films (on the contrary!), but if I want to see a really intense, hallucinatory and intoxicating film, I do watch Enter the Void. Or, perhaps a better comparison, Natural Born Killers. This tinkering by Gilliam was especially sleep-inducing, where I had hoped for a chaotic, busy and intense rollercoaster of a film.

I also wouldn't know what should be so great about this audiovisually. Cheap gumball aesthetics, dull soundtrack, and 'trip' scenes that are shaped by ugly effects and a lot of rubber.

Rarely have I seen a film that, thanks to its execution, has such an adverse effect on what it hopes to do. If this is really what an average trip looks like, drugs are boring. 1*, pathetic movie as far as I'm concerned.

gilliam.

I think most of his movies are brilliant. Wonderful stories with a deeper layer, beautiful design and a lot of absurd stuff, fairytale games with dream and reality worked out with great detail...

Then this is the exception. Because here it just really doesn't work for me at all. At the time, I was really looking forward to the film, and it was really disappointing - I think it was the first time I've walked out of the room during intermission, and it took me a while to see the rest - and that confirmed that I really didn't like it.

Now tried again - it still creaks a bit why this one doesn't work. Perhaps it is just so simple that there is no dream world in it - but that it is all 'real'. something like that. But what certainly doesn't help is that Depp and Del Toro are just terribly annoying. Can only be hardened if you are also cracking stoned yourself. Maybe that's it.
