"Passion Temptation Obsession."
The career of tennis pro Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) is coming to an end and he takes a job as a teacher at an exclusive London tennis club. He befriends one of his students, the rich, handsome and spoiled Tom Hewitt. Tom introduces Chris to his family and soon Chris starts a relationship with Tom's sister Chloe. Although there are plans to marry Chloe and Chris due to his "adoption" by the Hewitts financially and commercially, he can't take his eyes off Tom's newest girlfriend, American actress Nola Rice (Scarlett Johansson). Chris has an affair with the unstable Nola. When their passionate relationship threatens to threaten Chris' new lifestyle, he is faced with a dramatic choice. How far can one go in his opportunism?

There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net, and for a split second, it can either go forward or fall back. With a little luck, it goes forward, and you win. Or maybe it doesn't, and you lose.”
Match Point is a real Woody Allen movie in which he has pulled out one of his favorite themes, guilt and penance. Allen likes to put his characters in confrontational situations and then let them make a choice. Match Point is no exception and this time Chris is faced with an impossible choice.
Cynicism is not strange to Allen so actually you as a viewer should see Chris' choice coming, but the shock is still great. The dreary London is the setting and that is an excellent choice because it makes the story just that little bit more gloomy. Rhys Meyers is great as Chris, who has to choose between love/lust and his comfortable life with the rich woman. Scarlett Johansson is of course the perfect actress to evoke the lust in Chris and gosh, she is sultry and stunning here. In the end, Allen puts his own spin on Chris's possible penance and the tennis ball just in front of or over the net band is a nice metaphor for that. Match Point is one of Allen's best movies for me.

Recorded by the VPRO and seen tonight...Dijk van a film. Great actors, good dialogues and another free wisdom from Socrates in the movie "The greatest happiness that can happen to a man is never to be born...". Allen made the film in response to criticism of his style that is reflected in all his films: neurotic people, nostalgia, a lot of nonsense and nonsense, in which he often played the main character himself: a neurotic failure who thinks himself small and ugly and has no success with women, filled with left-wing ironic humor and self-mockery.. To deal with his critics, he made this drama/thriller. Apart from craftsmanship, there is nothing to be found that points to the maker: Woody Allen. (except guilt and fine) A film that has stayed with me for a long time after watching about ten years ago because of its rare quality. I remembered part of the story, but didn't know how it ended. Seeing this film again in ten years...will probably be on TV again. Masterpiece. (Oh yes.....I don't like to see Scarlet Johansson at all...then I know a whole lot more attractive actresses.....and Dione de Graaff is ten times sexier)
