That's a pretty weird video. At first glance, one teenager seems quite normal and the other not, but that turns out to be slightly different. I did appreciate it.

The story plays a minor role and the focus is on the crazy characters and the visual approach. I didn't think that was wrong. It looked good, with an interesting setting, which is used quite well. I found the bit of color in between quite ugly and the black humor sometimes didn't always work well.

But other than that it's definitely a nice viewer. Nice and rude and coarse at times, quite original and never boring for a moment, also because the playing time is very pleasant.

3.5*

Special film, especially because the raw emotional cinema tends to nihilism, which I have mainly encountered in many later films. For example, I am thinking of Irréversible, but also of Aoi Haru. The characters are badly damaged, and seem to seek validation from each other, and this quest is quite interesting, even though everything may be very heavy-handed.

Visually strong, beautiful black/white contrasts and nice lighting. The color images on the beach were also OK, but the other color images were mediocre with the tomato ketchup blood. It is the only failed visual experiment, which can be contrasted with reading comics.

Musically somewhat different. I like jazz, but I think it's a bit less appropriate with these kinds of films. The punk guitars like Aoi Haru are more appropriate as far as I'm concerned, but punk rock didn't exist in those days. For that time this was probably the best choice, because it certainly doesn't work badly.

In the end, the film is between 3.5 and 4*. A number of points that show that the film is a bit outdated, but especially in terms of atmosphere it feels quite modern. For that reason still 4*.

Nice review.

I was a bit afraid of it in the beginning. Classics remain a difficult thing for me and although the film certainly charmed me the first time, I have also seen a lot more Wakamatsus in the meantime, and the novelty has worn off a bit.

But look, thanks to the mix of high-contrast black-and-white cinematography with a dash of color here and there, and a soundtrack that sounds much too modern for the time in which the film was released, it remains a strong film in terms of stylization. That other mix (hard themes with a touch of poetry) ensures that it is more than just an exercise in style.

Wakamatsu remains a fairly tough director, and certainly not everything he has made is equally good, but this film also stands up to revision. So it is more than just surprise or shock value. Doesn't take a second too long either, so absolutely nothing to complain about, a worthy classic.

4.0* and a extensive review
