Seom plot

"A beautiful yet dangerous place..."

Two outsiders have withdrawn on an island. Hee-Jin is a woman who sells fish and food during the day and her body at night to the fishermen who visit the island. Hyun-Shik is a suicidal man who has lost interest in life after killing his ex-girlfriend. When Hee-Jin tends to his wounds after Hyun-Shik's suicide attempt, an obsessive and abusive relationship develops, which allows no outside interference. For him it's a kind of drug that numbs his pain, for her sexuality is the only form of communication she knows.

Little but fascinating story, about an unusual (sex) relationship between two remarkable

individuals, in a sober film adaptation. Visually often of a treacherous serene beauty, in

contrast with some gory, horrific scenes. The film mainly breathes alienation, and you come

actually not a moment really inside, the drama also quite absurdist. However with

the effect that the film, especially because of the atmosphere, left a pleasant after-effect on me.

According to several scenes, the concept of fishing (angling) gets a strange one here

connotation.

Stays strong.

Although you can see that the film is now somewhat older, and Ki-duk has also made progress as a director over the years. But at its core, this is a truly quintessential Ki-duk, where his own style really blossoms for the first time.

Silent, tragic characters who want to find each other, but either don't have the luck or ruin it for themselves. Despite a lot of vague decisions and few sympathetic sides, Ki-duk still manages to create empathy for the protagonists, not so obvious.

Visually there are still very nice shots, but in general sometimes just a bit too functional. The same goes for the soundtrack. Acting is very strong and the intrigue remains until the end. Not Ki-duk's best, not exactly the film I would recommend as an introduction to his work, but anyone who is a fan of the best man simply has to see this one.
