Die Hard 2 plot

"Die harder."

When Agent John McClane is back in Washington for Christmas, he sees something strange at the airport. He intervenes and discovers that these are very tough boys, although he does not know what they are planning. Once the police realize he's right, it's too late. Terrorists control the airport and the planes in the sky and in one of those planes is John's wife. He tries to stay hidden, take out the terrorists and certainly not die easily, just like last year.

Still just as fun as the first part.

Many will not agree with me, but I think this is just as good.

It's all not very original anymore of course since the first film has already laid down the rules a bit. The story is more or less a bit of a repeat of the first part, in this however everything is grander in everything. The skyscraper has been exchanged for a refuge and the European bad guys for American bad guys who work for a South American bad guy.

But the setting is really great. The need to rescue everyone who has to keep circling above and cannot/are not allowed to communicate with the ground personnel is just palpable. The action has been set up a lot bigger and is now not limited to a location or specific building.

Willis and the rest of the cast put on a very good performance and Renny Harlin does a great job delivering a very good sequel and it worked out well imo.

As a second part quite good.

The first half for sure, the story starts smoothly and it comes across to me a lot better than the story of part 1. Better played by Willis, although I find it difficult to explain exactly why. Perhaps less exaggerated fuss. It is a pity that that level is not maintained, and besides that the second half derails completely in impossibilities, improbabilities and nonsense. Not that the beginning is very credible actually - Dulles is a large airport with a lot of international traffic, the somewhat lackluster reaction of the police and the like is not something I really like. In comparison, I once participated (a long time ago) in a disaster exercise at Schiphol, you really don't want to argue with the KMar there - you don't win that. Plus, Dulles is pretty close to a lot of other major airports. Everything that flies in circles in the air could therefore easily have diverted to it. And then in the second half it really gets going with all the goofs - check the IMDB page just for fun, there are 162 there. I liked the hatch in the runway the best. Still, the whole thing is quite entertaining, if at times it does feel a bit like a TV movie - maybe that's more than anything because of Dennis Franz's head, and still in the same shade of blue as the one we used to like him better. know too.

Die Hard 2 is a repetition of moves on almost every level and of course does not come close to the original, but that is certainly not a shame. The first part is überhaubt one of the best action movies ever made, and a sequel was never going to top that. Yet, despite that, it is immediately noticeable that Die Hard 2 is also incredibly fun and entertaining. The Christmas setting is another golden move, and the airport is a very nice location (although not as effectively and fully utilized as the skyscraper in part 1). The action is often present, and is well portrayed. It's a bit more over the top and McClane is already a bit more invincible, but it's still interesting enough. Bruce Willis also seems to be visibly looking forward to it again, and something like that always works well and is infectious. It just doesn't make much sense this time from a story point of view that McClane is in the middle of the action all the time, but disturbing doesn't. The bad guy is not of Hans Gruber's level, but William Sadler plays a more than deserving and threatening role. The other characters and supporting roles manage to make less of an impression this time, although it is nice that most of the figures from the first part are present in a (small) role.

All in all, this sequel doesn't have to be ashamed in the presence of the original. Less in terms of level, yes of course, but the pure entertainment factor has remained largely intact, and that makes Die Hard 2 just a very nice action film. 3.5* stood and remain standing.
