“A legend is sung of when England was young, and knights were brave and bold.”

I last saw this movie 15 years ago (or even longer). And I can still speak scenes almost word for word, that's how many times I've seen this film. Not the best Disney animated film, but the story about (King) Arthur and the sword, Excalibur, still appeals to the imagination. And Merlin still remains the best character, and all of his scenes are great.

One of the best Disney movies, it all takes place again in a forest. Forest = For rest. Well, you don't need to see this for your peace of mind, because it seems like everyone is at the Red Bull.
Based on The Sword in The Stone, the first part of The Once and Future King by TH White, but Disney gives it a completely different spin. The film lasts only 45 minutes, most of which is spent in scenes where the wizard Merlin transforms his apprentice Wart and himself into an animal, which is repeated up to three times. First in a fish, then in a squirrel, and finally in a bird, each time a different predator trying to catch them. The scenes with the wolf are very funny, funny drawn too, with Roadrunner-like scenes. Wart learns to swim like a fish, to fly like a bird and to climb like a squirrel and thus learn to put himself in another, in this case another animal.
The last fifteen minutes is the icing on the cake, when Madam Mikmak appears and enters into a magic duel with Merlin. Always nice those bad guys from Duckburg and Duckburg Forest: Midas Wolf, Vittorio Weasel, Zwarte Magica, Boris Boef.... Mikmak eventually drips with typhus.

In terms of atmosphere, this is a pretty nice Disney, and it also has some really nice characters: Merlin, Madam Mikmak, and of course the owl Archimedes, what a boss. But in terms of story it still falls short, or actually, there really isn't much of a story. The 'adventures' that are experienced here mean that Merlin and his protégé Wart turn into an animal a number of times, and occasionally argue with the kitchen staff in the castle. With another wizard duel at the end (which is very entertaining), the end. With a little more plot, this could really have become a Disney favorite, now it's just an entertaining little thing that could have been a lot more.
