Code Inconnu: Récit Incomplet de Divers Voyages plot

"Love has a language all its own."

The center of Paris. A frustrated boy throws a piece of paper into the lap of an illegal beggar. When an indignant witness tries to force him to apologize, a fierce argument ensues. The police intervene, with the result that the two ruffs have to go to the station and the illegal woman is deported from the country. This drama forms the intersection of the film. In the following, the story of those involved is told. Central to this is the aspiring actress Anne (Juliette Binoche). She is directly or indirectly involved with a farmer's son who has run away to the city, a Romanian refugee, an African boy who teaches music to deaf children, and a traumatized war photographer...

With Haneke I know by now that I can always expect something special. Sometimes that is much more successful than other times and Code Inconnu remains somewhere at the bottom of the middle.

Such a mosaic film is nothing new in itself, but the form in which it is told certainly is. Yet the form is perhaps the biggest problem here. I found the transitions to the different situations often far too fast and as a result the stories often remained at a considerable distance. Apart from that, there are a number of strong moments, in which it is also usually Jullie Binoche who appears. I also think Binoche is a particularly fine actress, who has managed to convince in every film I have seen with her so far and does so excellently here too.

But most of it didn't really stick with me. Only the last ten minutes, in which Haneke reinforces the events with drum rolls in the background, were very strong and also quite exciting. Still, it can't prevent me from finding Code Inconnnu as a whole a bit of a failure. Experimenting may be fun, but it doesn't always lead to something good. Haneke certainly remains an interesting director for me, but one who constantly fluctuates in level.

2.5*

Special film. The short pieces, the abrupt ending. You have to like it. I do appreciate this film. I think it is very creative, authentic and Juliette Binoche is one of my favorite actresses. She plays sublime again. I think the acting is very good and realistic anyway. Because of the short pieces, I find it difficult to follow. I didn't get into it completely. Maybe I'll watch it again. I give it a 7. 3.5*

No idea what to think of Haneke. Often a hit or a miss with his films. With this Code inconnu I didn't really know what to think of all those fragmentary pieces. I quickly lost the thread. The opening scene for example I found very strong, just like most fragments with Binoche who I think is a top actress anyway.

Technically this Haneke is fine with its close-ups and excellent camera execution. Editing and plot sometimes very confusing with the flashbacks and flashforwards. The film lost me every now and then. Not all fragments and characters are equally clear or interesting and that makes it not easy to follow well.

The film and its fragmented approach is not linear and the goal or intention is not always visible. Not a bite-sized film at least.
