Entertaining video from Siegel. Pretty funny anyway. Some running jokes that quickly become faint, but around the grumpy farmer in the big city it wants to be fun. At least he encounters a number of eccentric figures. Cobb is doing great as a bumbling police chief and that prisoner is a filthy underdog, even though he doesn't get enough screen time. In addition, it is mainly the women who demand attention.
Or how Coogan deals with them. Flattering, making love, kicking and throwing, something like that. Nice, that certified ding dong (how's everything in Australia?), while a nice dose of sixties psychedelics is involved in the nightclub. The zeitgeist plays its part with a light plot that mainly serves as a signpost and then you automatically end up with some action and the like. But it is mainly the clash of cultures that does it.

The culture clash between New York and Arizona already mentioned here is actually very poorly developed and consists solely of the same kind of quips “Wooha, nice boots, Ponderosa!” Laugh, howl, roar!
The more interesting culture clash is Coogan's Bluff's transition between the classic film noir B-movie (where Siegel excelled) and a more modern kind of metropolitan action film. The result is an anachronistic mutant of a film, an almost Dadaistic experience where clumsiness and clumsiness are upgraded to stylistic features, the characters move like mannequins and talk like drunk aliens: “good pasta sauce has to simmer for at least three hours!” Have another drink, old man.
Stripped of any notion of psychology, the film feels like a farcical skit where Eastwood stumbles into some setting, has a non-interaction with whom he finds, may or may not decorate a babe and disappears.
My favorite scene is without a doubt this one where Eastwood is first rambling with the slut of the villain and then almost willfully being lured into a trap. After all, how could he have known not to step unarmed into a billiard bar where his enemy's sweetheart is leading him? The ensuing pandoering is excellent and is reminiscent of the somewhat clumsy roles that Mitchum often played in the past. Eastwood is not a perfect strategist or invincible powerhouse here (with Calahan he would kick off the MAGNUM of the one man army heroes), but an asshole who systematically gets into trouble, just for fun.

Coogan's bluff has become a smooth, but also somewhat disappointing police film. Not bad in itself and quick and easily manageable, but partly because of that the quality falls somewhat short. The plot is simple, doesn't amount to much and does contain some plot holes. More interesting is Coogan's character himself. In a style that was characteristic of Eastwood in his westerns and later police films, it is always a pleasure. His boldness, his grim face with pensive eyes, walking with a calm step has become so characteristic of his characters. Take, for example, the scene with the taxi driver: just great that dry humor and opinionated opinion.
The other characters pale in comparison to Eastwood. They are even quite annoying except for Ringerman. Probation officer Julie is nothing more than a flirtatious silly goat and is downright annoying, especially in the final scene. The role of the woman from that time was also clear. Especially if you include the scene with that sleazy guy. The film lacks depth and a good plot. The one-liners and action are OK. Clint then does the rest. Nevertheless, the collaboration between Siegel and Eastwood had some nice sequels such as Two Mules for Sister Sara, Escape from Alcatraz and Dirty Harry.
Just not enough, but it is certainly a nice binocular if you want to relax for an hour and a half.
