The Outlaw Josey Wales plot

"...an army of one."

During the American Civil War, mobs wreak havoc in the Wild West. The quiet life of Missouri farmer Josey Wales is suddenly completely destroyed when a gang of guerrillas murder his wife and son. Terrill, the leader of the gang, leaves Josey for dead but survives the massacre. He joins the rebel leader Fletcher. From now on, he has only one goal in life: to take revenge. At the end of the civil war, the guerrillas are granted amnesty. Fletcher and his men surrender. Only Josey refuses to do this.

Finally time to watch a movie as part of the challenge, and luckily it was a fun one too. A lot nicer than I expected based on the poster. The Outlaw Josey Wales follows the extended wanderings of the title character, Clint Eastwood as the ultimate raw husk, white spunk Josey Wales. After we see Josey's family being massacred by the Union army in the opening scene in the Civil War, Josey first joins a group of rebels and ends up roaming solo. And Josey Wales is a typical Clint Eastwood character: tough, cynical, independent, at war with the world (also quite literally), but several times during his tour of the west he also shows his good side as soon as he sees injustice. In the end he also has a small posse of an old Indian and a group of women that he saved from the clutches of different groups of scum. It's an entertaining, beautiful-looking but somewhat long odyssey through the old West, which becomes more and more light-footed during the film. There are many confrontations and a lot of violence in the film, culminating in a tense and quite non-traditional showdown with a group of Comanches and then against the real enemy: the authority and the many scum that American society brings. Finally, Josey Wales also thinks his restless life has been nice and he is going for a new family life with one of his rescued beauties. Worth it: 4.0*.

And my 2000th vote goes to....

Clint Eastwood always does well in his gunfighter roles. Here too a lot of chewing tobacco is spewed, with a sharp look and silent he challenges or crashes. Awesome and mythical. Josey Wales, first small farmer, then guerrilla fighter who refused to surrender, is on the run from blue blouses who want his skin. Wales has a revenge motive and still has a bone to pick with the murderous Northern Captain Terrill. He is joined by a chatty old Indian and a number of pioneers on their way to a better life. A funny moment is never far away, but there is also a lot of killing. The images of the wild west still look fantastic and the film has everything that makes a western: shootings, Indians, saloons, a fearless hero and persistent pursuers. Between 4 and 4.5*

We hear I reckon regularly in this film. I must have seen The Outlaw Jesse James once but I think a long time ago. That's how I knew that girl who died way too early. I think Jesse James is one of the best western movies ever. At least in the best 5 of all time. I don't think the playing time is too long. Just right in a nice balance with calm action and beautiful images. The story is fairly simple but goes on nicely without ever being boring. We see just about everything in this western. Cowboys Sellers Blue Shirts Indians Pilgrim Poachers Farmers and Whores! The build-up is well taken care of and is exciting until the end. Hardly anyone is left of the entire cast after 45 years, except for good old Clint who can turn 91 this year! The image on this blu ray is fantastic! And the bullets come in almost live at what more could you want. We just have to do it with English subtitles.

Movie 4.0

Image 4.5

Sound 4.5

Extras 4.0
