Texan Jonathan Corbett (Lee Van Cleef) is hired to track down Mexican smallholder Cuchillo Sanchez, who is suspected of raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl. Corbett becomes convinced that the wanted man is innocent.

Delicious spaghetti western indeed.
Lee Van Cleef and Tomas Milian are opposites here, but complement each other in a beautiful way. The quietly stoic Van Cleef finds himself in a game of cat and mouse with the busy always talking Milian. I really enjoyed watching the two tackle each other.
Meanwhile, it all looks pretty good visually and Morricone's supporting score is more than worth it. The action may also be there and is more than sufficiently present. Yes quite enjoyed it and definitely worth it if you like westerns.

Good film in which an unofficial court officer is hunting down a man who murdered a girl. An entertaining spaghetti western. The escapes of the seemingbad-guy make for some entertaining moments. Lee van Cleef is well cast, but Tomas Millian makes just a little more impression. The music of Ennio Morricone fits in seamlessly with the whole. Easily 3.5 stars.

Reasonable.
Ennio Morricone steals the show again with an excellent contribution. His music actually deserved a slightly better movie, although I can't call The Big Gundown a bad one. The film does many 'spaghetti' things just right: Lee Van Cleef in the lead role, great music, a striking German(?) figure as the villain.
But it takes me a while to get into the movie. Certain acting is nothing to write home about and that sometimes detracts from the panache of such a film. Dubs don't always help with that - I'm someone who often suffers from that. Nevertheless, a decent snack within the genre.
