Schneider and Brando dance their version of the tango in Paris; bitter, exciting and sometimes hilarious. Rock-hard anti-romance bathed in a jazzy existentialism.

Very young Jeanne prefers the nihilistic foul-mouthed and canine behavior of middle-aged, newly widowed Paul to the kitschy and lying frame into which her soon-to-be tries to squeeze her, but when Paul finally takes a romantic gamble – a desperate flight ahead from the… despair, it seems - things take a different turn.

As with his previous film, Bertolucci once again turns it into a feast of colour, light, shadow and magnificent compositions. Very nice what he does here with weathered mirrors and frosted glass, and the targeted use of the score. Excellent build-up, with effective use of all story elements, and a great last half hour. There is nothing too much about this movie.

I knew Brando was a giant, but I also really like Schneider – who I really only knew as the anti-actress in Professione: Reporter. Great presence too.

Last Tango in Paris is a tad better than its somewhat grubby and scandalous reputation might suggest, and I'm happy to keep rehashing that scandal, but nobody's going to talk me out of that this is a fantastic movie.

When Marlon Brando passed away in 2004, I devoted a piece to it on my weblog. Of course 'Last Tango in Paris' did not go unmentioned. I'm copypasting part of my story below.

"The film in which Brando made the most – and indelible – impression on me was 'Last Tango In Paris. In it, he plays the role of a recently widowed forty, who meets a girl and makes love to her. a crude, unsavory way that feminists later billed the film as misogynistic, even pornographic.I remember a lively discussion with a friend during a walk on the boulevard in Scheveningen, where we came up with a comparison between Last Tango and Turkish Delight. That girlfriend thought 'Last Tango' was downright pornographic, and although I won't argue that Turkish Delight was, Last Tango wasn't primarily about sex but about the fateful sadness of the main character, beautifully played by Brando. roll ever.l

Because at the same time you recognize - or feel - behind all that indifferent rawness with which sex is practiced the true motives of the main character: driving out sadness and loneliness, sex as a means of coping with grief. Until Brando really falls in love with his young girlfriend: it ends badly for him.

Brando was also his part in this film. Later, the man who, as said, has known many women, would say: “All my life I have been looking for the love I never knew”.

The drama has not been spared in his personal life either. His son was on trial for murder and his daughter committed suicide. Brando himself grew more and more dense in recent years, he ate many liters of ice cream a day. To ease the pain of life: “I eat to feel good”.

Marlon Brando is no more. With that, a living legend has become a real legend."

Mediocre.

Film with a reasonable status, but in my opinion not worthy of it. Yes, the film is more unique than other films in some respects and Brando plays 1 of the lead roles, but otherwise it eludes me a bit what makes this film so good. I found it a long and especially tiring sit to get through.

I'm not a fan of romantic movies, strange as they may be, that only portray sexual acts as a form of romance. Almost all forms of romance are all about sex here, and if you're into that, this movie is definitely for you, but it's not much for me. I find it a very limited look at the genre and above all a bit easy.

I couldn't really taste the chemistry between Brando and Schneider either, because both actors do their own thing here. Brando is still doing reasonably well, but Schneider was seriously bad. Moderately convincing dialogue and theatrical actions fly across the screen, and she simply never feels like a realistic or normal character.

The sometimes refreshing movements of the camera and at times modern direction manage to hide something, but otherwise I found this film to have little in common. Boring portrayed world and even duller romance due to a great lack of chemistry. If the side characters are doing better than the main characters, you know something is going wrong.

No, this wasn't really for me. Sometimes downright tiring film that has an annoying second hour. The first hour was still manageable because of the sometimes modern and striking directing, but in the end the story and the characters take over and then the film slows down. Long, exhausting and theatrical. The status for this film eludes me completely.

The relaxed, captivating acting of Marlon Brando is, in my opinion, the only reason to watch this artyfarty erotic drama, because there is little else to do. Maria Schneider is pretty bad and the two storylines, both unenthusiastic, never intertwine intriguingly. Visually neat, with atmospheric camera work and striking locations, but the content is really quite dated and, above all, boring. The infamous nude and sex scenes also have little to do (!), despite the hint of controversy that hangs over the film.
