Alfie plot

"Meet a man who never met a woman he didn't love."

Alfie (Law) is a Brit who successfully seduces women in the States. Women are Alfie's lust and life, as long as he doesn't have to feel attached to them. When his best friend takes a dip in his relationship, Alfie tries to help the couple in his own way, eventually leading him to sleep with the lady in question. The ensuing troubles make Alfie think. Because what is it really about in life?

What's it all about?

In advance I had not exactly expected that Alfie would answer the question about what life should actually be about and although the question is explored, there is no satisfactory answer. Unfortunately, Alfie also scores poorly on the fun factor and this title largely follows the same path as Don Jon, who was released in 2013. Still, Alfie overall is really a few notches less than that film because the light-hearted tone with which the film begins has already disappeared after half an hour, while it was retained a bit longer with Don Jon. This film also generally had nicer characters and I also thought Joseph Gordon-Levitt is just a bit better Playboy than Law is.

The men certainly have one thing in common and that is their strange choice for the more mature ladies. This could have been more credible if really beautiful ladies were chosen such as Selma Hayek, Jennifer Aniston or Jennifer Lopez who are really about the same age as Jane Krakowski. Because although this lady exudes class, I can't imagine that as a young man you get sexually aroused by this. The same was true for Julianne Moore in Don Jon, but let's just keep it to a matter of personal taste.

Alfie ultimately leaves a bit of an unsatisfactory feeling overall. Maybe I didn't quite get the message myself, but in my eyes it was a little thin. The film should have chosen to either expand the light-hearted tone of the first half hour or go more in-depth by, for example, delving deeper into the origins of Law's fear of commitment. Now the story floats too much on the surface to become really interesting, and there is far too little humor present to keep it all somewhat entertaining.

2.5*

“You're lucky you know. I rarely allow anyone into my flat.”

Swinging film that remains entertaining for a long time due to the playful direction and strong acting. Unfortunately, the drama and the moralizing message increasingly take over, and that is certainly not Alfie's strong point. Jude Law does well as Alfie and is assisted by a strong line of actors. And especially the first hour is fun with enough lightness, flair and humor (especially with Jude Law looking straight into the camera and talking to the viewer). Fortunately, the ending is devoid of sentiment and pleasantly ambiguous.

A nice tragicomedy about womanizer Alfie. The role is made for Jude Law. He's not my favorite actor, but the dialogues looking straight into the camera are great. He actually appeals to all men and gives tips about what to do and not to do. Women pay attention then you can recognize it! Hilarious moments and occasionally more serious scenes follow. At the end, bean comes for his wages, the seducer gets away with it, because love still does not want to succeed ......
