Excellent film in which a journalist and a pilot go after a mad scientist. An adventurous story with quite a few spectacular action scenes. The characters are predictable, but are filled in by a nice cast. However, where the film really shines is the visual aspect. The setting (1930s) is beautifully portrayed using many shadows and little color. The entire design harks back to various old styles and it all looks equally beautiful.

Perhaps a bit strange in design, but actually it worked quite well. The thirties atmosphere came across just fine despite the constant presence of green screens. Perhaps it was also due to the fake decors. Although I'm not usually very fond of it, I did find it atmospheric here and it provided beautiful pictures, such as the construction of the zeppelin on the Empire State Building.

The story is very grand in scope. If gigantic robots aren't enough, the next creations are coming up again. The nice thing about the film is that it has also adhered neatly to the science fiction of that time. Something that you can clearly see in the appearance of the robots, rockets and the like. It all goes so smoothly that you only realize later how simple the story is. It's not brilliant, but it's entertaining. For example, I liked the underwater fight and the the lost world-like sequel nice scenes. The acting is often very wooden. It looks funny rather than disturbing. It seems to me that it is difficult to act in front of a green screen. In any case, the result is a fun adventure film with lots of winks.

Big windfall.

The plot has enough to keep the body interested, but the story eventually gets off to a slow start and resembles an Indiana Jones movie in terms of structure.

But after a smooth ride of over an hour and a half, this turns out to be an easily digestible bite full of self-mockery and winks.

The cast has understood that self-mockery well. I don't think Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow are bad actors, but neither are they superpowers. Here they both shine a bit. Law excellently plays the smooth (even narcissistic), somewhat wooden hero and a beautiful Paltrow does the same as the supposedly tough but above all block-to-bone opponent. Their chemistry is also a big plus.

But this tribute to the thirties (in which film noir and science fiction are combined) is especially visually worthwhile. Of course the use of green screens is obvious, but let that be the wink. The computer-animated image of the time is very atmospheric, with the lighting and use of colors particularly striking.

3.5
