What a masterpiece Mike Leigh has created here thanks to the unparalleled acting of Marianne Jean-Baptiste. At times uncomfortable to watch. Despite the fact that Pansy continuously shows the worst of her character, she still seems to have a good sense of humor without realizing it or even being able to laugh about it herself. On the contrary. It slowly becomes clear that an underlying depression or trauma is the cause of her behavior. The last scene is heartbreakingly painful. 5 stars from me.

Mother's Day is just around the corner and sisters Pansy [Marianne Jean-Baptiste] and Chantelle [Michele Austin] are preparing to visit their mother's grave together. Pansy is an unemployed whiner who constantly nags at her husband Curtley [David Webber] and her 22-year-old son Moses [Tuwaine Barrett] and snaps at everyone she meets. Chantelle, on the other hand, is having the most fun at home with her daughters Kayla [Ani Nelson] and Aleisha [Sophia Brown]. Baptiste's inane whining and her response to it is often hilarious (her visit to the dentist is a highlight). Leigh's overarching message seems to be that people deal with grief in different ways. But you get the sense that Pansy's grief isn't just about the loss of her mother. The cryptic ending reinforces the sense that Leigh is somehow not telling the whole story. The acting is phenomenal.

Long live director Mike Leigh, but not all of his films are great.

The positive reviews of this film seem to me to come more from respect for him than from the quality of the film. For over an hour and a half I watched a film that could not find a balance between drama and comedy and in which the characters play their roles one-dimensionally, which (understandably) invites overacting.

Did I feel uncomfortable? Not at all.

Was I moved? Never.

I fervently hope this film isn't his farewell, because Mike Leigh deserves better.

Mainly boring. And Jean-Baptiste is mainly irritating and beyond belief and therefore never funny. This is called realism but I found the film quite theatrical and this story would have fit perfectly in the theatre because the locations are mainly indoors and the camera very static (and the photography also not very interesting). The parts with Chantelle's daughters are much better. As a whole I wouldn't call the film bad and I certainly appreciate that there are no answers to everything and you don't get an explanation or that there is no real ending at the end. However, I didn't really find the film great as a viewing experience. 2.5*
