15-year-old rebel Jackie [Malloray Wanecque] falls for Clotaire [Malike Frikah], a 17-year-old bully who is growing up for the gallows and the wheel. What they see in each other is a mystery, that it will have a disastrous outcome is self-evident and that they meet again as adults (played by Exarchoplous and Civil) is as predictable as it is ridiculous. It would have been nice if Lellouche had given even one reason to sympathize with these characters. Unfortunately, he revels in extreme violence that only alienates us from Clotaire. And with a running time of over 160 minutes, this is terribly long. Stylishly filmed hot air, but an energetic dance to 'A Forest' by The Cure is something I cannot leave unrewarded.

Well, 163 minutes. That's a bit too much for a film like this. There's not enough to tell for that. The pacing certainly falters quite a bit. Otherwise an interesting film. The music is also pumped up and comes across well (and some nice things are done with it, like in The Cure) and the film also has some cool ideas and shots. Around that second solar eclipse, or a shot under that yellow climbing frame or in the beginning where you see a shooting via shadows on a wall. So there's a lot in it, but the film didn't touch me. Clotaire is someone who doesn't interest me much, Jackie is played first by an actress who, although her acting reminds me of Exarchopoulos, also stays a bit out of the emotion. And then those 2.5 hours really start to count, even though the last hour went by smoothly. 2.5*

Lellouche does directing.

And not for the first time, I see, and his previous film was apparently quite well-received as well. This one also has a great cast, stunning visuals, and a hip, epic runtime. Bring on the awards.

But it's really not my thing. The idea behind this kind of biography of non-existent people is that it should somehow be possible to connect with them, to evoke some kind of sympathy. And I just can't do that. A vague sense of empathy, but that doesn't automatically translate to 166 minutes of cheerful attention. Not even with La Ex in the cast. And then that annoying little voice starts whining that the story could have been told in an hour less. Or two. About the beautiful saturated colors that serve no purpose in the story. The awful soundtrack. Plot holes that you can spot everywhere. The weak ending.

On the other hand, it's definitely craftsmanship, don't get me wrong. But it's also just not really my thing.
