"The two lived there."
Sophie is eighteen and works hard at the hat shop her father once owned. On a trip to the city, Sophie runs into the mysterious wizard Howl. Howl is terribly handsome, but when the jealous Witch of Waste sees them together, she decides to curse Sophie. Sophie is suddenly 72 years older and to keep her secret she flees to Howl's castle. He doesn't recognize her and hires Sophie as a housekeeper. Soon the old Sophie is rocking the castle. But how will Sophie ever escape her curse?

Howl's Moving Castle is another beautiful, modern fairy tale from Miyazaki.
Ghibli seems to have a patent on original (even if this is a book adaptation), catchy and moving animated films.
In that respect, this film also scores high on many points and I occasionally enjoyed what was conjured up on the screen. Super cheerful images are interspersed with very dark moments, which ensures a good variation in the tone of the film and manages to build up a nice tension.
In terms of emotions, I find it all a bit less strong than other films. Sophie seems to fit the role very easily and I think this whole concept (the hex) remains a bit on the plain throughout the film.
Fortunately, the film is full of fun adventures, so Howl's Moving Castle manages to place itself well in the list of Miyazaki films and is above average fun. But it's not a classic in the series.

Because of its place in the one and only Pomodorini top 10 I went to see this one, but I am disappointed. If you compare Howl's Moving Castle with Miyazaki's other work you see a lot of similarities, so I got the feeling that I've already seen this film. The best is the first hour, after that I found it a bit confused and my attention wandered. I thought the ending was a bit like I'd seen it before and didn't think it was that special. I'm also not the biggest fan of anime, mainly because it is sometimes a bit exaggerated (often than good stories). The animation is very nice by the way, and the talking fire and the scarecrow are very nice.
