A Ghibli that is remarkably less appreciated than Papa Miyazaki's more recent films. The difference with, among others, Castle in the Sky and Howl's Moving Castle is minimal. Tales From Earthsea is less exuberantly drawn, but the story is just as good. Maybe I'm a little more thoughtful here. There are a few fragments in it where I still wonder if it is suitable for children. Some people die on screen and the ending will be a bit shocking for the little ones, but I enjoyed watching this again myself. With the Miyazaki's it is common that a lot of things are borrowed from non-Asian folklore. It's no different here. Ghibli does it again!

Give me Hayao. 'Gedo Senki' looks beautiful at times, but drowns in uninteresting things. I had no connection with the characters at all and I didn't care much about the course of the story. Half the time I really had hardly any idea what I was watching. One of the lesser Ghibli's.

Very mediocre Ghibli. There are, however, some nice moments in it. For example in the countryside, and certainly some images of skies are beautifully drawn (somewhere like a shot in the countryside near the fence where the golden sunlight of the setting sun colors the world gives an enormous atmosphere). The world that is shown is also fascinating, yet it never really comes to life. The film simply seems too short for that, I had the feeling that there was much more to tell (and more to tell). Add to that an apathetic main character and it's a film that doesn't captivate enough. Especially the ending doesn't give much more interesting. 2.0*.
