"They don't need a reason."
The young woman named Maya is about to start a new life with her fiancé Ryan. They drive through the country and are on their way to the northwest of the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, the pair's car breaks down and they are forced to spend the night in a remote house in Oregon. During the night, they are terrorized by three masked strangers who attack them without warning or reason.

Quite a nice horror thriller with a decent start and subtle tension. However, director Renny Harlin conducts a lot more traditionally than, for example, Bryan Bertino, which brings it closer to pure popcorn entertainment. Although the original ideas have been kept to a minimum (they must be present in the sequels), the film is skilfully constructed and Madelaine Petsch in particular gives a very solid performance. So solid in fact that she forms an above-average chemistry with her somewhat colorless co-star, an advantage that is always drastically needed in these types of genre works. Once things get going, you as a viewer are also guaranteed some effective scares and exciting sequences. The pace is high enough and the quiet situations are nicely alternated with the busier moments. It's a pity that Harlin sometimes tries a little too hard to fill the background with eccentric figures (the observant viewer may have recognized Richard Brake) and the ending is a bit bland, but apart from that, I had a great scary evening in the cinema. There's nothing wrong with a simplistic genre piece every now and then, provided it's executed with enough effectiveness of course.

Well, I was very enthusiastic about the new trilogy, but what a very poor start.
Completely unnecessary, uninspired, almost shot for shot remake of the 2008 original (which, by the way, still stands as a rock). On what basis was this necessary?
A lot less than the original on practically every front. The acting is a lot less convincing than that of Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. Madelaine Petsch really doesn't come across as believable for a moment.
The worst part is that it never gets REALLY scary. The feeling of threat, the subcutaneous tension of knowing as a viewer that someone is already inside... It all just doesn't work. Camera work also a lot less than in the original. There you had the brilliant shot of the masked man appearing in the background in the dark kitchen. In this Chapter 1 this is weakly imitated using a mirror. Everything is actually a poor copy of the original.
It's that I have a soft spot for the franchise, otherwise this would have ended up even lower. After The Strangers (2008), Johannes Roberts came up with the truly brilliant (and innovative) The Strangers Prey at Night. I'm curious to see what direction this reboot will take in the 2nd part.

Not bad at all. Don't understand the bad ratings. Of course it's not new, it's a cash grab, they want to make a trilogy, but Rennie Harlin knows how to turn it into an exciting film. The choices the antagonists make are unexpected, well-timed suspense and scare moments with very good editing. The acting wasn't the best, but they didn't do a lot of stupid actions, which I normally expect. Great horror, nothing wrong with it. Curious what they will do with chapter two
