Why.

It's not even that The Strangers 2 is a bad movie, because it definitely isn't. But it's still not clear to me why The Strangers had to get a second part. The original was good and a limited hit, but the setup is so generic that it could just as easily have been a new movie. Some other masks and no one had thought of the original The Strangers.

It is of course true that Bryan Bertino (director of the first) co-wrote this second part. It wouldn't surprise me either if he had wanted to make this film for a while, something must have intervened. It seems to me that his influence has also been a bit bigger than just the screenplay, or Roberts is a pretty good copycat. Looking at his previous movies, it's a little weird that he's coming out with a movie like this now.

If there is one thing that characterizes this film, it is quite the dry form of horror. It's not even that brutal or gross, but it does arrive, just because it is brought so dry. Lots of attention to atmosphere, few jump scares and a lot of mood shots. And when there is murder, it always feels painful.

Acting is okay but not extremely special. Visually it is good, a bit faded look but very attractively portrayed, especially in terms of editing. The soundtrack is also heavily used. I personally hate the 80s soundtracks, but here it is used with some irony. Reminded me of the Battle Royale soundtrack. Happy songs under fairly gruesome images.

Few expectations beforehand, afterwards it is still not really clear what the added value is of the sequel compared to the original, but as a film itself it is just a very solid horror film.

3.5*

Nothing new under the sun, but very well executed. A very simple slasher in design, but the film brings a certain believable hardness with it, which makes it sometimes more reminiscent of an Eden Lake in terms of tone. The murder scenes are performed very secrecy without too many bells and whistles, the killers are ruthless (and without motivation) and the atmosphere is very sinister. Some visually fun scenes too, like the pool murder.

Again a few of those typical bland moments (brother doesn't dare shoot killer), but otherwise a slasher that just does what it's supposed to do. Something you don't see too often. 3.5*.

Also revised.

Just re-watched the whole series one night to better recall the movies. While the first part got stuck on the same fail, this pass worked its way up to a better pass. Johannes Roberts sends this second part in a completely different direction than the first part.

And that's a good thing, because I thought the first film was just a tense whole. This part seems to be going in the same direction at first, but after about 20 minutes it turns into a slasher through and through. A slasher that gets just enough subtle touches from director Roberts, who with this second part manages to find a very clever balance between basic slasher and subtle family drama, and that also in a short time with a wafer-thin story.

It also helps tremendously that the film has a cast that has enough acting talent. Pullman and Madison make up two intriguing characters with excellent chemistry. I found them to work even better compared to the characters that are supposed to be iconic, namely the trio. However, just like in the previous part, I found these apparitions that rarely manage to be scary.

Visually a successful reference to the 80s, but in a modern jacket. The scene in the pool is masterfully shot. With this film, Roberts proves to have evolved from a cheap SyFy director to a skilled horror director. This film also has strong editing with the sound and good camera work, which takes the simple content to a high level.

Also very nice that the creeps are killed and that the mother also dies remarkably early. You will not find high carnage in this film by the way. I thought it was a shame that the film is a bit reserved in terms of gore. Furthermore, a stylistic slasher that is nicely put together. Wonderfully directed by Roberts. I'm looking forward to his new movie, although I doubt it will look like this one.
