What a movie. I just can't sleep. If you don't understand the movie, I can understand that you think it's a bad movie. It's also quite a difficult story and I also had to explain a lot of things to my girlfriend because she didn't understand.

I understood it and felt the tension that hung throughout the film. For the last half hour the tension was so bad that I was tempted to leave, that's how scary I found it. I really had to relax in the car.

The scariest part for me was the mother hanging in the corner of the room . Then I really didn't know where to look.

Now I go to sleep with my night light on and some music on.

Horror isn't just about blood and jump scares. Otherwise you have a very narrow view of the genre. Hereditary aims for the sinister atmosphere and that is highly enjoyable. An apparently perfectly normal family slowly begins to end up in a bizarre nightmare. The slow pace was just a necessity here. It must creep in. Some clues are given: you quickly guess that the deceased grandmother had something to do with a cult or sect. But that's not enough to predict and explain everything. The daughter cutting the head of a dead pigeon, the mysterious flashes of light... it's scary that all those things happen and you can't see the bigger story behind all those events. So somehow it's a good movie. I didn't really find it exciting, but it was very oppressive and dark. As in VVitch : A New England Folkstale for example. The acting of Byrne (is not much) and that son (bumbling) disappointed me, but the mother is doing fantastic here: she also has facial expressions that fit in these kinds of films.

Since I saw the film in the cinema I have already reviewed it a few times and can only conclude that this should be given the full 5 stars. What a hauntingly strong film this remains. Ari Aster as the driver takes you on a wild ride, continuously pulling the wheel and sending you going in all directions, from twist to jerk. The film is visually stunning and stylistically insane, while the tension is manageable for two hours; even - or especially - if you don't know what exactly is going on. Rarely do you see such a strong icy atmosphere as here. And the acting remains unbelievable, Toni Collette should have won every film award available for this role. But the rest of the family is strong too, with Jesse Klaver playing a good part (only his crying got a little laughable, at times) and Milly Shapiro is also wonderfully creepy. And poor Gabriel Byrne. Poor, poor Gabriel Byrne.

5 stars!
