Exciting and scary as usual. The combination of the music and the seriously scary jump scares more than make up for it! We thought this would be another less sequel, but that is certainly not the case.

Oh well, the Red Door is a nice ending to a franchise that kicked off with a top 3 horror movie of the 21st century for me. It is of course almost impossible to surpass this. Of course, this fifth part, directed by none other than Patrick Wilson, is a film that cannot be in the shadow of the masterful first part, but not of the strong second part.
Compared to contemporary horrors, I think Wilson could make this a fun movie. A film that is atmospheric, makes good (and justified/deserved) jump scares and plays with the expectations in these situations. I always like that and it keeps you sharp. This results in some very nice scenes.

In that respect, all fine and therefore this film easily scores a sufficient for me. But in the end, the plot is a bit silly. Like they didn't learn from part 1 and do that memory wipe again. While part 1 has clearly shown that you should not hide this away, but rather embrace it so that you know how to deal with it. Furthermore, the climax was a bit weak. The fun scenes that are built up do not result in a climax that leaves you on the edge of your seat. It may end a bit too weak and without real guts. But it does feel like closing this franchise. This will undoubtedly be the cause. But how creepy was the end of part 1?

But yeah. Besides the weak mess that this movie has to compete with nowadays, the movie is still a lot better than many movies that come out in the horror field. The tensions work well and the jump scares are well deserved. But it just lacks that bit of grit and guts to be really good. For a fifth film in a horror series, it is quite impressive that the standard achieves this basic level of a sufficient.

Every horror universe apparently needs Patrick Wilson. This, now the fifth part of the series, chooses to lean closer to previous films. I had seen the earlier parts once, but I didn't manage to rewatch them, so I must have missed a number of links.

In my opinion, the film never really takes off. The role of Lin Shaye (Elise) is reduced to a negligible supporting role and an earlier forest-doer from "The Further" is brought back to life. Of course there are also a lot of unprocessed traumas. All the conversations and conversations in between took me a bit too long and I was also disappointed that the characteristic Insidious sound / soundtrack was not actually used. The Insidious films directed by James Wan remain unmatchable, the time may have come to end the series.
