Of course they are pretty much milking this series, but hey, as long as they remain reasonably good films, I don't mind at all. This third part also appeals to me, and even though the film has to have more of the jump scares than of continuous tension, the mission is still successful.

3.5*

7/10 (IMDB)

Pretty bad formula work. Oh, I got lost a few times, but that's mainly because every scary moment is underlined by an overly loud sound design. As if the director is yelling in your face: 'and this is the moment when you have to get scared'. I think that's a weakness; real horror is creating suspense where you don't have to lean on lazy jumpscares. I also found the dialogues to be ridiculously thick often; people simply don't react or talk that way. The acting performances are also quite below par, although the daughter and father still do that quite nicely. That comic relief duo can still go through with it. Some scenes are also successful, and the biggest advantage of the film is that it only lasts 90 minutes, and goes by quite smoothly. Darth Maul may also pop up for a second, funny.

The first two Insidious movies, especially the first one, are just really good horror movies, but this one just isn't. And that's a shame really, because in terms of lore the Insidious series is much more original than, for example, The Conjuring universe. The problem is that the creators just do something random, and the lore is totally, but really totally, not consistent. If the rules are not clear, and anything can happen, any potential interest immediately disappears from me. 2*.

In Insidious, Elise Rainier [Lin Shaye] referred to a case that made her decide to quit her work as a medium. This third installment in the uninspiring Insidious franchise features a “Man Who Can't Breathe” [Michael Reid MacKay] that's as scary as its name suggests. Widow Sean Brenner [Dermot Mulroney] enlists Elise's help because her daughter Quinn [Stefanie Scott]'s nightmares may be related to the death of her mother [Ele Keats], but the seance nearly costs Elise her life and convinces her that she here has to do with a great evil. Whatever. Steve Coulter returns as Elise's friend and colleague Carl, unfortunately the totally unfunny 'Ghostbusters' Specs [Leigh Whannell] and Tucker [Angus Sampson] also make an appearance in this exhausting, lame horror film. The poison cup was not finished yet: there had to be another sequel!
