“Want to play a game of hide and clap?”
With The Conjuring, James W has delivered a horror film that does not do much new, but on the other hand does not need much to create a chilling atmosphere. It's all close to perfection. The acting of Farmiga, Wilson and Taylor in particular is very strong, and Wan's directing is extremely effective.
A creaky old house, an exorcism, a ghost in the shadows, slamming doors etc. It's all been done before, but in the hands of Wan it still feels fresh and original. The cinematography is also beautiful, and when you see Farmiga walking to the water at some point and you really get an overview shot of the house and nature, it is a pleasure to enjoy. Through a combination of directing, acting, strong scares, beautiful images and music, The Conjuring is an example for many horror films.

Chewed old limp extremely predictable shabby crap of the worst kind. This childish stuff (a cliché series of scare moments) is not worth watching. Pure waste of celluloid. Just flush.

A well put together film that only lacks some originality. The haunted house concept has been done hundreds of times, and normally I don't like it much, but in this film it's really well portrayed. The atmosphere is fantastically captured, scary but not too grim, and a nice soundtrack in the background. Patrick and Lorraine Warren are captivating characters like some serious version of the Ghostbusters. The ending of the film may be a bit too sweet for horror fans, but I thought it was very beautiful and fit the family theme well.
Maybe the haunted house story is no longer original, but for me this is the best version of it, a good atmosphere and a fascinating story, nicely directed and there is nothing wrong with the acting, 4.0!
