The film sketches a nice atmosphere of the 1980s – the heyday of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and conservative kindred spirits – as a reaction to the stormy 1960s and 1970s. We see everyday life through the eyes of a young teenager, who distinguishes between knows right and wrong but is not concerned about the consequences. That is immediately the problem. This semi-autobiographical film does not get much further than some superficial observations, without much depth. Protagonist Banks Repeta is a pleasant surprise.

Failed movie. I have no idea what Gray means by this. Is this something autobiographical? Probably. But the film goes nowhere, lacks atmosphere and never comes to life. Partly because of the two child actors. Webb as a black friend gets stuck in clichés, both his role, environment and interpretation. And Repeta, as a young Paul Graff, does not give any depth or emotion, so that none of the moments with him start yapping and I did not understand for a moment what his problem was at home. Really, no clue. Visually nice, sometimes with nice music, but there is no real atmosphere creation. The pacing is fine, despite the mediocre content quality, the film looks quite smooth. But at a distance. I was not hit for a moment.

It's that the adults still act pretty well. Strong brings a lot of depth to his role as a father who may not quite know how to raise a child and can't show affection but has something and does his best and has the best: the best role as far as I'm concerned could easily have become clichéd, but Strong does a lot of good with it. Hathaway is also very nice as a modest mother and Hopkins has a terrible role that has everything it takes to be kitsch, but Hopkins gives enough humanity and every scene with him in it is warm. Anyway, that doesn't make the film suddenly sufficient. 2.0*.

It's 1980 and Jewish Paul [Banks Repeta] is getting used to his new school. He quickly befriends Johnny [Jayline Webb], a black classmate who knows better than anyone what it's like to be a victim of discrimination. But where Paul can hide his background because his father [Jeremy Strong] took the family name of Rabinowitz in Graff, that proves impossible for Davis and that makes Graff think about his identity, discrimination and his responsibility to stand against it, even if it is that at his own expense. Atmospheric image of the time, thanks to a pleasant 70s and 80s soundtrack, and strong playing by Repeta and Webb in well-developed roles. The scenario, however, is not very surprising.
