The Straight Story plot

The Straight Story is a road movie based on the true story of 73-year-old Alvin Straight, who in 1994 takes a six-week trip on his lawnmower from Iowa to Wisconsin to visit his ailing brother. The fact that it is half a day's drive by car makes it clear that his trip is a reconciliation gesture to his older brother, whom he has not spoken to for 10 years after an argument. Along the way, Alvin meets various local residents, each with their own story.

An old man travels 360 km on his rickety lawnmower to reconcile with his brother. That's about it. Such a premise may not sound inviting, but The Straight Story (it's in the name) is one of the purest and most honest films to find their way to the screen. In this modest drama, the otherwise striking David Lynch reflects on mortality, family relationships and the meaning of life. That 'meaning' is mainly in the journey: the will to go out, still unaware of the beauties you will encounter along the way.

I didn't expect it, but despite the simplicity, this is a beautifully moving drama. The music takes you on the furthest ride ever made with a lawnmower. The atmosphere exudes tranquility and makes you enjoy small things. It doesn't all run smoothly, but his lawnmower sputters into the slopes and rushes past itself on the descent.
What cannot be missing in a road movie are the people you meet along the way. Beautiful friendships are formed, melancholy conversations about the war and musings about the past. You would think how boring, but nothing could be further from the truth. This is a movie that can teach each of us about what life really means and we should think about it more. I even dare to hand out 4.5*, because this is a beautiful film that couldn't have been much better.
