Farmer's sons Léo [Eden Dambrine] and Rémi [Gustav de Waele] have been each other's best friends for years. But when they get together in class during their freshman year of high school, classmates wonder aloud if the boys might be a couple. As a result, Léo takes a little more distance from Rémi, with the result that the two best friends increasingly go their separate ways. The scenario is never completely convincing, but Dhont manages to elicit excellent play from the young Dambrine and Dequenne and Léa Drucker (as the respective mothers) also impress. Beautiful camera work by Frank van den Eeden in this tribute to Truffaut's Les Quatre Cents Coups from which Dhont largely copied the final scene.

Nice movie, lump in the throat and stuff. In Close that is mainly due to the power of the events themselves and a little less than I like to see through cinematic means. But Dhont does little wrong. The close camera work and the emphasis on eyes make you feel the loneliness of mourning strongly.

Great authentic drama film again by Dhont in which serenity and pure emotions are central. No corniness or false sentiments to be found here. Where he already scored highly with Girl (Film, 2018), he goes a bit further here. I can fully follow the comparison that has already been made here with Un Monde (Film, 2021).

The premise is clever and it doesn't revolve around sexuality at all. It is this mere perception that makes Léo think about the intimate friendship and strong one-on-one relationship he experiences with his best friend Rémi. The playground and the new environment of the secondary school is a jungle. The innocence and the playfulness are suppressed. Léo realizes this better than Rémi. Ice hockey also acquires a symbolic load and serves as a metaphor in which innocence and later the guilty is armored.

Excellent acting by the teens. Beautiful cinematography with a focus on the faces and eyes of the characters, which stand out even more with the blurred backgrounds. And beautiful flower fields that symbolized friendship and fragility. Top movie! Movie of the year for me!
