Clarisse is staying alone in a hotel room. One day she decided to leave, while her husband Marc and her two children stayed behind. Her daughter continues to play her music on the piano in the living room. The father and his children continue to have breakfast together. A mother sneaks out of her house at dawn, leaving her husband and children behind in ignorance. I have been able to follow it that far, but I cannot make heads or tails of what follows. To me, it is a great jumble of scenes and developments in which I have been unable to discern a thread, except that the daughter's piano playing plays an important role in the life of the enigmatic mother. Perhaps the puzzle pieces will fall into place better upon rewatching, but I will wait a little while before doing so.

That mention on the title screen—in red, while the rest is just black and white—gives me far too much the impression that the film was really only about that—that the director, the producer, or one of their buddies had that car and something had to be done with it. Tom Poes, come up with a film.
And that is precisely how the story comes across. The subject matter is quite interesting in itself, but you would expect it to be given substance. A progression, if you will. But surely at the very least some kind of message, something that characterizes people in a similar situation, and preferably helps them along a bit—or if not themselves, helps the people around them to recognize it and come to terms with it. None of that, and instead, the script plays hide-and-seek with the core issue for a long time.
But so, actually, it is perhaps just about that car. It fits somewhat with the materialism and nihilism that seem to be running rampant in society. Riding on someone else's suffering because you are looking for a chance to show off your little car. Is it going too far for me to look for something like that behind it? Perhaps, but given the behavior of the oligarchs these days, it is surely not exactly absurd.
Furthermore, yes, I believe Krieps acts well, although that is difficult to judge when the story is so absurd. As for the rest, I won't say anything at all about it. And Amalric, with his 14th film as director by now, seems to be seriously stumbling over the concept, although the direction is perhaps okay in a strictly technical sense. But can you make a decent film with that?
