After twelve years in an institution, 22-year-old Mona 'Lisa' Lee [Jeon Jong-Seo] manages to escape. It soon becomes clear why she was seen as a danger to her surroundings and police officer Harold [Craig Robinson] smells trouble. Mona finds shelter with stripper Bonnie [Kate Hudson] and her son Charlie [Evan Whitten]. Bonnie uses the special gifts of her 'friend' to make a lot of money in a short time. After an interesting opening, the story turns out to be little, despite Hudson's daring role and convincing acting. But Amirpouri plays with genre conventions and stereotypes in an interesting way, especially with regard to the sneaky-looking drug trafficker Fuzz [Ed Skrein]. Pleasantly unpredictable and difficult to categorize - it also has interfaces with horror and family drama - but Amirpouri leaves you with many questions.

It starts promisingly with that escape from the clinic. It seems to be a kind of light-hearted horror, with a lot of blood and horror, but in a rather light-hearted and somewhat mysterious way. The fact that that girl is going to discover the world for the first time quickly produces comic scenes. Fancy. Bring it on.

That atmosphere lasts until that annoying kid shows up on the scene. He is one of those typical precocious American Hollywood kids who spew out the most clichéd moralistic nonsense in beautiful sentences. Instead of pictures with sex and violence, they should give a warning for this: watch out, conservative America has something to say again.

Anyway, if you think away from that guy, it's quite a nice movie. I especially liked that extremely friendly drug dealer. You expect that he will take advantage of the situation, but he just doesn't. And you initially think that the mother of that child is some kind of angel, who is just a bit bad luck, but actually it's kind of a selfish bitch. Playing with expectations, that's what the film does quite well. Sorry about that kid. Or did I already say that?

The film, which revolves around a woman with telepathic abilities, is the third feature film by director Ana Lily Amirpour. A fascinating film that may not be as remarkable as her debut A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014), but a film that stands out. Certainly within the fantasy genre, the tone of which is often determined by bombastic and easily edible films with Hollywood superheroes.

The film does not have many action scenes. After a violent start, the film lingers pleasantly in an atmosphere of grimness and mystery. The film uses a calm cadence without many violent peaks. There is also hardly any reason for Mona Lisa to harm others. A false antagonist who incites her to violence is missing from the story. In the case of Mona Lisa, it is her environment in the form of stripper Bonnie Belle (an expressive Kate Hudson) who encourages her to abuse her skills for personal gain.

Main character Mona Lisa Lee (a subdued Jong-Seo Jun) is difficult to characterize. You can hardly call her a heroine because of her criminal activities. However, she is not an anti-hero either. She does not use double agendas. She is not cunning or malicious. Treating someone maliciously in advance is not in her blood. Mona Lisa falls outside the typifications. Mona Lisa is really just a pale character who operates without clear motives of her own. It is therefore difficult to empathize with her character, let alone sympathize with her.

Amirpour, who is also responsible for the screenplay, makes a film that is fun to watch. Bit of humor. Little touch. Characters that are sketched rather superficially, but do arouse a certain interest. Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon tells a fun adventure without specific good-bad relationships. It doesn't sound like much, but it's enough.
