Palm Springs plot

"Live like there's no tomorrow"

Sarah has traveled to Palm Springs to attend her sister Tala's wedding. She herself is the bridesmaid, once a different role than being the black sheep of the family. Nyles [Andy Samberg] and Sarah [Cristin Milioti] meet at a wedding where he flirts flashy with her. The two walk together into the sand dunes where their potential romance is interrupted by a bow and arrow armed man [JK Simmons] who is after Nyles. During their flight they come across a mysterious cave. Nyles begs Sarah not to follow him into the cave, but to no avail. And that completely turns both lives - but especially Sarah's - upside down.

Without giving too much away, this is an original take on an often used basic premise, thanks to a scenario that subtly sprinkles hints from the start about how the fork is in the stem. Samberg and Milioti benefit from their mutual chemistry and Barbakow's smooth directing ensures that the successful jokes follow quickly. Gets a little too serious when it works towards a somewhat forced happy ending. Simmons has an amusing supporting role as a fellow sufferer who acquiesces to the status quo. Stay tuned when the credits begin!

Surprisingly fun movie. Or surprising might be the wrong word, given the pretty good reviews and respectable score here on Moviemeter, but the film still exceeded my expectations. The concept of the time loophole is of course anything but original, but it is perfectly worked out as far as I'm concerned. And I also really liked that after 10 minutes it is already clear how it all works. This left more time to do cool things with the concept. There is often enough humor in the film, but especially the drama elements I found very well developed. There are still deeper themes such as nihilism versus hope, for example, but without the film ever becoming heavy. Handsome balance. Moreover, the film looks very nice, and stays neatly within the lines at an hour and a half. The film's greatest asset, however, is the cast, especially the two protagonists. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti both do an excellent job, are well attuned to each other, and have real chemistry. Samberg in particular shows here to be more than just a comedy actor. The ending was just ambiguous enough to stay interesting, but as far as I'm concerned it's clear that they've gotten out of the time loop.

Very nice movie. 4*.

A very enjoyable film that is well developed on all levels.

Everything is just right and for a pleasant evening there is something for everyone: there are funny parts without being ridiculous, romantic without being corny, profound without being pushy, there is a (limited) plot twist that I did not see coming, .. .

The actors are also excellent and I have no problem staying in the story.

The music is nicely chosen and the cameraman also knows how to do his job.

I like the fresh version of an old concept the best. Yes, I enjoyed it!
