Jo [Jessica Chastain] and David Henninger [Ralph Fiennes] are in Morocco for one of Richard Galloway's [Matt Smith] infamous hedonistic parties. After a night of drinking, David gets behind the wheel, but oops... he kills a young man [Omar Ghazaou]. Shortly after Richard helps sweep the incident under the Moroccan rug, Abdallah [Ismael Kanater], the victim's father, shows up at the door. He demands that David accompany him and be present at his son's funeral. Fiennes plays his most unsympathetic role since Schindler's List in a film full of reprehensible characters who make no secret of their arrogance, racism and general contempt. Very unpleasant viewing.

McDonagh makes a nice game of it - who's likeable, who's the hero in the story, and who are the bastards, the infidels, the stronzi, the wretches. Against the backdrop of an uber-decadent party of a bunch of extremely obnoxious and over-entitled people in the middle of the desert where they have absolutely nothing to do - because that's where the nomads live. In your bare ass in the infinity pool with a view of the camels, to put it nicely. Post-yolo versus subsistence farming. If there's a better communism commercial, let me know.

In terms of acting and casting, there is really no in between. Fiennes is perfect as an alcoholic jerk who thinks of nothing but his next drink, Chastain only cares about who pays for her next drink, Smith has obviously never heard of ethics or mores, and Landry Jones can rattle them off but chooses a darker path . The perfidity is dripping from it.

Opposite the integrity of the grieving father, in a brilliant role by Ishmael Kanater who also gets all the space to play with his character - from sinister, hateful, loving, to finally contemplative and forgiving. The simple righteousness of an honest existence in the face of the complexities, lies and deceit of modern society. The contrast could not have been starker, and the suspicion of the western protagonists gives new depth to the old adage 'as is worth'. And how unfair is it that Kanater is not the first and biggest name on the poster, while he just plays away all (uch) big names.

Whether the ending is appropriate, I would have chosen a different one, it doesn't fit very well with the rest. But still a very, very good movie.

Excellent film about a couple who are on their way to a party and hit a boy. The clash between the rich Westerners and the poor local population is well portrayed. Nicely unsympathetic characters with an excellent role by Ralph Fiennes. A number of sharp dialogues and the setting in the Moroccan desert provide some beautiful pictures.
