In the 1950s, Kya grows up alone in the swamps after being abandoned by her family. When her former boyfriend is found dead, she is turned into the prime suspect by the police. The villagers of Barkley Cove also see the murderess in the mysterious and wild young woman.

On October 30, 1969, Sheriff Jackson [Bill Kelly] discovers the body of teenager Chase Andrews [Harris Dickinson] under a lookout tower in a swamp near a town in North Carolina. Based on very flawed "evidence" they arrest Kya Clark [Daisy Edgar-Jones], nicknamed "the swamp girl" for murder. David Strathairn plays the sympathetic lawyer who takes on the defense. In flashbacks, we discover how horrible (and melodramatic and unbelievable) Kya's childhood was, as well as how he became friends with Tate Walker [Taylor John Smith] who, for reasons completely unclear to me, has no part in the process. Apparently based on a penny novel, as the plot is wafer-thin and just as far-fetched (and ridiculous) as the title. Almost laughable nonsense.

Reasonable film about a girl who grows up alone in the swamps. The film certainly starts off well, but the romantic part is a bit less interesting. A nice story that is also well constructed, but a slightly faster pace would have been nice. More than enough beautiful pictures of the Louisiana swamps. A small 3.0 stars.
