Marcel the Shell with Shoes On plot
"Everybody loves Marcel."
The cash-strapped documentary maker Dean heads to an Airbnb where he discovers he's not alone. The seashell Marcel lives on the spot with his grandmother Connie and their pet Alan. Marcel and Connie have lost their community in a mysterious disaster. Dean cares about the fate of his newfound friends and makes them the subject of his new documentary. Marcel immediately gains many fans and hopes to find his long-lost family again.

I didn't feel this A24 at all. Marcel is sweet, but the whole youtube/60 minutes thing feels a bit unoriginal and the emotion when finding his family/community didn't reach me. It does have some nice finds and it ripples along ok, but it didn't really impress.

It's a nice movie, but it works better as a short film. Nevertheless, Marcel is very cute and the way he looks at the world is nice. But I did miss a bit of tension or drama, it is a sweet candy this film.

What a nice movie! The story of a documentary maker who makes a film about Marcel, a shell with feet. Quite meta too, because the documentary maker is Dean Fleischer Camp who also directed and made the story with his former girlfriend Jenny Slate, who in turn provides the voice of Marcel. Slate is great and brings one of the better voice acting. It has become a warm film with quiet subtle humour, without ever becoming dull. Gradually it is a bit predictable and the intimate something is lost, but by then you are already completely wrapped up by the small shell.
