American Murder: The Family Next Door plot

The Watts family seemed so innocent and happy. In 2018, 34-year-old Shannan Watts and her two young daughters were reported missing in Frederick, Colorado. Using raw, first-hand footage, this documentary examines the disappearance of Shanann Watts and her children and the atrocities that followed.

Not too good, for fans of these types of documentaries and especially the interrogations of the police, I recommend the Villa murder. This was just a long-winded event with an endless stream of apps and videos that actually add very little.

The style of making this documentary is not very original and it actually leans more towards a production that could have been broadcast by Investigation Discovery, for example. The pace ensures that there is (too) much build-up and you actually want to get to the climax. On the other hand, this also speaks in favor of the film, because even though you sense which direction the film is going, you still want to know. It is all so incredibly shocking and sad what happened to Shannan and her children, but above all common. The statistics at the end of the film are telling and give the documentary its right to exist.

Fascinating case due to, among other things, the sociopathic behavior of Chris Watts, which has already been extensively analyzed in various YouTube videos (YT channel JCS Criminal Psychology devoted an interesting video to Chris's interrogation). The fact that it has been widely reported in the (American) media and that Chris gave a TV interview after the 'disappearance' also makes this controversial.

I already knew quite a lot about the case, but I still saw a lot of security cam and court footage that I had not seen before. However, for those who already know everything, the documentary does not offer much new.

The makers occasionally kept things exciting by playing with chronology and building up tension, but that mainly led to a slightly too long running time.

But still, fascinating by the subject and details of the case. It also helps that America is less strict with privacy for those involved; allowing video recordings, private photos and camera images to be published openly.
