A mediocre horror film that, after a strong start, slowly but surely sinks to a questionable level. The premise has some potential and the cast isn't too bad, but the script and characters are simply too flat and generic to stand out within the overcrowded genre. A few scary moments, that's it.

Oh dear.

For the most part, Body Cam manages to be quite an entertaining horror film. That is also immediately the frustrating thing about the film, because for the most part, what you see is very decent entertainment that you get through easily. What helps especially is that the film doesn't immediately reveal exactly what is going on.

It also helps if you have genuinely interesting characters. The backstory they are given is a bit tedious, but the charisma works wonders. Wolff, in particular, makes for a likeable character. The mystery surrounding the so-called threat and how they pursue it is also presented with enough flair and pace to hook the viewer.

Visually arranged with a nice setting, but not brilliant. There is particularly a bit too little energy from the camera itself, but ultimately that isn't really the film's weak point. The disappointing element is primarily the film's content. The script has quite a few holes and seems to skip sections regularly, but the choice made toward the finale to put a truly unique stamp on the film is simply dull.

Yet another variation on a kind of vengeful spirit that doesn't really fit into the film. I found it poorly developed and, above all, very simplistic. You hope the film will still have some fun with blood splatters, but that doesn't happen either. As a result, the film slows down so much in the third act that the sour impression is mainly the overpowering taste left on your tongue. A shame, because it was quite interesting and the pacing was good.

Singer Mary J. Blige delivers a nice performance as police officer Renee Smith, a deeply troubled woman who lost her son in a terrible accident and has recently stayed home because she lost control of herself in front of a suspect. It is good to see Mary J. Blige delve so deeply into a character with a rather emotional role; she is good and believable.

Renee is back with the police, but right at a boiling point for the force. An aggressive public atmosphere prevails in the streets of Los Angeles following the death of a Black man at the hands of the police, and the city is on the brink of riots. This film is rooted in great realism and raw reality, a police thriller that feels dangerous. Racial tension and an eerie, somber atmosphere hang in the air as Renee drives through Los Angeles with her young, inexperienced partner during her night shift.

On her first night shift after her return, officers are murdered in a brutal and disturbing manner, but in an unusual and gruesome way. Something supernatural is at work that is targeting officers.

It is up to the troubled and hurt, but kind-hearted Officer Renee to investigate the case.

Body Cam (named after the cameras officers wear on their bodies) is well-filmed with nice cinematography that makes the nighttime streets of LA look somewhat creepy and dangerous. The supernatural elements are also reasonably well-developed and not exaggerated or a messy CGI mess. Moreover, the supernatural element has a deep meaning and reminded me of the urban horror of Candyman (1992)!

What disappointed me most was how the trailer gives the impression that it is a science fiction film.

It is, however, a supernatural thriller and barely even that, but it is still an entertaining little horror film, without being truly scary or memorable.

A 6.
