Strong drama about a subject that we have seen several times in the film world, where a housemate becomes seriously ill and the countdown becomes to death or a life-threatening operation. While this is usually accompanied by a very empathetic partner within a strong marriage, this is not the case here. Tomas and Anja lead a bloodless love life. The routine is in and both approach each other in a rather businesslike manner.

When the diagnosis was made, Tomas seemed very helpless and inept to me. From a distance you can see him observing with his mouth open, but he does not know how to treat his partner when tired. Very strong role from Skarsgard, as always. Hovig is also doing well.

The film is very serene and subdued. Despite the melancholy theme, not sentimental at all. The difficult moments are not accompanied by corny strings. There is hardly any background music and that is how it should be. Further some thought-provoking scenes such as the phone call to the top doctor, the round of confessions, the scene at the hairdresser or the ironic phone call to the dentist. Nice!

Normally I don't like these types of films at all (about how a couple or a family deals with a mother who has fallen ill), but the Scandinavians have a patent on quality dramas and this film is a bull's eye in that regard. From the start, the film is oppressive and gripping and my eyes grew wetter: not because the film is sentimental but because - as almost only the Scandinavians seem to be able to do - the human soul is placed on the cutting table and you have to look at it as if in a mirror. experience how your own soul is cut open. One of the top films of recent years.

Writer/director Maria Sødahl has delivered a gem with this sometimes raw, but always sincere film about a couple who have become estranged from each other over the years and are subsequently confronted with a terminal illness.

This is not least the merit of the protagonists Andrea Bræin Hovig and Stellan Skarsgård. Their memorable scenes-without-dialogue are breathtakingly beautiful. Without wanting to do Skarsgård short, Hovig in particular shows her exceptional class as an actress in those scenes. Masterful.
