A unique film about a contemporary theme: the influencer. After a blistering opening, we mainly see the everyday grind of life and the attendant hardships of stardom. At the end, a predictable moral is thrown in during the interview, and all in all, it's a film that plays out predictably.

And yet I remained captivated. And that's because of the main character. Because we see her online a lot, the question arises from the very beginning about what she's really like and whether she's truly engaged with her fans, or if she's just being social to rack up likes. The irony is that both are ultimately true, and in her loneliness, she's just as dependent on her fans as she is on them. Perhaps even more so.Her online image sometimes gets in her way, but don't we all experience that, even in the real world? Everyone pretends to be happier than they actually are sometimes.

I also love that she eventually used exercise as an opportunity to pull herself together. Because I did wonder whether she keeps her body in shape for her audience, or for herself. The latter turned out to be true. And so the film concludes with a (for me) somewhat unexpected ending, where I had to adjust my prejudices about influencers. Because it turns out that exercise and sharing her life with her online audience are actually things she needs. Things that are her life. And so her online image isn't all that different from her real life.

3.5*

We see the life of Sylvia, an influencer with a legion of followers. And as is typical of influencers, there's a lot of glitz and glamor, the idea of a fake world, and the image we have of influencers in general. This is partly refuted and questioned. But director Magnus von Horn wants to show the person herself first and foremost. Because it's not about THE influencer, but that they too are flesh and blood people trying to make the best of their lives.

From a distance, it was reminiscent of the Japanese film Helter Skelter, about a star and her ultimate pursuit of beauty. But Steam isn't so overwhelming, precisely because it's primarily a personal portrayal of the main character. That does make for a moving story. And it's also a film with beautiful, warm colors. Well worth watching, actually. A little gem.

Sylwia seemingly has a perfect life as a popular fitness coach, health guru, and influencer. She's young, slim, energetic, and athletic—a social media phenomenon. However, behind the glittering facade, problems lurk. Despite having six hundred thousand followers, she feels lonely. A stalker makes her feel unsafe; men see her only as an object of desire. Her family congratulates her but doesn't take her seriously.

She's not a spoiled brat, but someone who's worked hard to achieve something in today's fast-paced world. She has progressive ideas, cares about the environment, and makes videos about vegetarian food. With the camera on so often, you get the impression she's constantly acting. Sponsors pressure her to tell a positive story.

With her broad smile and lavish makeup, Magdalena Koleśnik resembles tennis player Sabine Lisicki. She wears two different shades of nail polish. The camera often follows her closely, for example, when her face bobs up and down during a fitness session. She's in top shape, radiant, and bursting with energy, but she also pays the price of fame. Passages of light and pink alternate with darker moments, when she finds solace in her dog. It's a sweaty whole that's less superficial than you might expect.
