Australia, 19th century. After the sensitive Daniel takes sides with a group of Chinese who have been attacked by whites in a gold prospecting camp, he is forced to flee the camp. In desperation, he tries to rob two shepherds, after which he is arrested and sentenced to twelve years hard labour. After six hard years, he is released again, but it is not easy to rebuild a normal life.
