Well-directed drama gives Constance Wu, best known for the hit comedy Crazy Rich Asians, a fine role as Destiny, a young woman who after a number of years in raunchy shops ends up in a strip club where the big earners come. Like her colleagues, she mostly does this work to pay the bills, but Destiny uses much of her hard-earned money to pay off her grandmother's debts. Destiny befriends Ramona [Jennifer Lopez], one of the most popular strippers, who teaches her - in a very impressive scene - all the tricks of the pole dance and makes Destiny make a lot more money. The future looks bright, until the 2008 banking crisis decimates the clientele and the ladies are forced to use creative means to empty the (trouser) pockets of their customers,

Jennifer Lopez looks fantastic and is not only utterly convincing as a stripper, but also continues to play cleverly within the boundaries of charm and manipulation leaving it up to the viewer to form an opinion about her true motives. Director Lorene Scafaria gives a lively picture of the world of strip clubs, in which the actresses show their sexiest side, but balances that with entertaining scenes backstage that show that they are intelligent, often very self-confident women (played by, among others, Cardi B and Lizzo) that men use to get their way. The first half of the film is therefore very good, but when the ladies reveal themselves as the hustlers from the title, the film gets a bit long-winded and it slowly drags on to the not so surprising ending.

Female directed film, written by women and played by women. A Wolf of Wallstreet light and a Coyote Ugly precedent.
J-Lo (24-07-1969 already already!) with a dazzling charisma (what is the female equivalent of charisma, because then I can put it here?) as a mother (check that furcoat scene, in which she like a mother hen takes care of the rookie) of the corridor.
Hustlers reigns over the heyday of strippers who serve as stock market boys who are preoccupied with money, power and beautiful women and feel deadly stared at those same stock market boys during striptease sessions.
They snatch what there is to snatch, perhaps grabbing from the stock market junkies who in turn have stolen/appropriated the pensions of fire brigades.
It's a rise and shine. A ravishing and smooth performance with touches of humor (during Christmas Eve for example). Hustlers is made with a heart and with a good feeling. And you notice that. The director has immersed herself with a number of strippers, been to a number of strip clubs and has poured her sociological projections into this capitalist bubble experience.

Boring.

Nowadays they often manage to turn the least attractive crime cases into a film. The base of the film seems to be rather thin. Not that I don't want to see female criminals, by the way. Do what you can not resist on the silver screen, but then pick up a case that is a bit more worthwhile.

It is also a pity that the cast currently consists of few impressive figures. It soon becomes known that they all seem to be about looks. This movie has to have some colorful environments and funny scenes. Sometimes fairly interesting issues come into play, such as the harsh world of prostitution, but they are pushed back into the background pretty quickly.

A lot of fuss and fanfare for little, that's how I mainly experienced this film. There is a story in it to a certain extent, but I don't get the impression that the film can choose between being a friendship film or a crime event. Either way I don't think both sides work, and in this case certainly not together. So it took me quite a bit of effort to get through.

Of course, it is subjective to the viewer whether these stories need a movie. Maybe I've gotten spoiled with the somewhat bigger crime cases, but I think it's mainly something to praise while it doesn't seem very complex. If it had been a bit more catchy, I could of course have swallowed it a bit better, but this was mainly looking at uninteresting figures who have their say for 110 minutes.
