Oppressive dissonant masterpiece with a mad Elisabeth Moss, a Sean Price Williams in absolute top form (that man is completely ignored in the Netherlands) and a soundtrack (maybe the best I've ever heard) that amplifies the madness to the maximum. The rest of the cast is also great and with some supporting roles and cameos from indie heroes. And then suddenly in a quiet part of the film Bryan Adams' Heaven on piano (level Britney Spears in Spring Breakers and Neil Young in Post Tenebras Lux); goosebumps. For reference: Cassavetes meets Noé?

Not quite all that. It starts off well, especially thanks to the cinematography, and I also liked the last part, but in between it's a bit of a familiar song. Artist is destroyed by fame, overestimation of self and drugs. It's a type of character that hardly interests me. I also don't find it that interesting in terms of acting: these kinds of roles in overdrive are not that difficult at all, and in the more subdued part Moss does the things she always does and that I mainly associate with The handmaid's tale. Of course she has an enormous presence and carries the role with ease, that's for sure. What I also find a serious sore point is that the music is really too mediocre to lend credibility to Becky's status as an artist. It says enough that the already mentioned Heaven is the musical highlight of the film. (Very different from Spring Breakers, where you have pink balaclavas, a flashy swimming pool and an idiotically swinging camera, while here a static shot is taken and any form of slickness is missing). One of the qualities of Alex Ross Perry as a director is that he dares to let a scene continue, as is the case here. Finally, the ending, I thought that was strong. The suggestion of the prediction and the daughter is used very well, with Becky who seems to recognize the moment and resolutely refuses to be dragged back into her old role , pan up and done (except for the nice end credits). So a very nice movie, but in several respects it really falls short to become a masterpiece.

RU Kidding Me? But played by a teenage band that's just starting out. That's the first impression you get of rock trio Something She, of which Rebecca [Elisabeth Moss] is the guitarist and lead singer under the pseudonym Becky Something. Becky is trying to make a comeback after breaking up with her former bandmates, but her impulsive, insufferable behavior makes her a nightmare to work with. For an hour, we watch the misdemeanors of a self-centered rock star in recording studios and dressing rooms. The dialogue is often drowned out by an annoying soundtrack that sounds like you're standing outside a rehearsal room or concert hall, but is probably meant to illustrate the confusion in Becky's head. The second half of the film, in which Becky finally shows some introspection, is better, but this character study would benefit from trained musicians and a central character who doesn't regurgitate most of the clichés of the fallen rock star.
