The American filmmaker Terrence Malick gives his oeuvre new weight with the monumental A Hidden Life. The ethical dilemma at the heart of the narrative spans centuries.

A Hidden Life is [so] anchored in human history, but at the same time withdraws from it. Franz was an unknown hero, as there are many. History was written without him, his grave never became a place of pilgrimage. A film became the monument of his hidden life.

Austrian farmer Franz refuses to take the Hitler oath. Nazis are mad at him, villagers mad at his wife. Gosh, how would this end? Terrence Malick brings us another terrible combination of (admittedly) phenomenally filmed beautiful pictures and endless pseudo-philosophical pretentious sermons, this time in the form of letters that Franz and his wife Fani write to each other. The inevitable end comes more than two hours late in this marathon broadcast of 'Discover Your Place', which almost makes you wonder who suffered more: Franz or the viewer. Take a pillow with you and do not hesitate to take a long toilet break several times, you will not miss anything. Skipping is also an option to seriously consider.

Matchless movie. For me one of the best movies ever. Do you dare to stand for something? And can that cost what? Lots of depth and symbolism. The beautiful Austrian nature, the beautiful shots and the calm, yes almost meditative pace complete the film. And I'm not even talking about the music. Does anyone know if this movie is available on DVD yet?
