Welcome to Marwen plot

"You can't put this hero in a box."

Since he was severely beaten for his fondness for women's shoes, Mark Hogancamp is no longer able to do his old job as a cartoonist. Instead, he has made a miniature in his garden of the fictional Belgian village of Marwen, where he films the WWII adventures of his alter ego Cap'n Hogie with the help of dolls and a photo camera. In doing so, he also tries to process his psychological trauma. Luck seems to smile on him when he meets Nicol, his new neighbor across the street.

Steve Carell continues to rise in my rating, he continues to top himself and has come a long way since Evan Almighty to name just one random example.
He portrays this role so strongly that as a viewer you almost immediately have a bond with him, Marwen's world is fascinating and sometimes even reminded me a bit of the rich fantasy I had as a child with my stuffed bears.
The light-hearted moments are regularly interspersed with the deepening of his character, little by little all the puzzle pieces fall into place and we also get to know Mark better and better.
It is a film with a heavy message, but at the same time the film manages to convey this in a light-hearted but also effective manner. In the case of Welcome to Marwen, a smile and a tear is an appropriate summary.

A small downside I found the development of the female characters, Nicol & Roberta are well developed but unfortunately there is little time left for GI Julie who we only see largely in Marwen and very little as the real person, right her character fascinated me! The same also applies, albeit to a lesser extent, to Carlala, who of course received more screen time, but was not really explored.

The fact that the perpetrators spontaneously start crying at the end also came across as a bit forced, but oh well!
Fortunately, this film does get a lot of things right and I enjoyed it from start to finish and empathized with Mark. The scene where he proposes to Nicol was very painful to watch, you just felt the awkwardness as a viewer!

Welcome to Marwen is a very successful film and without a doubt recommended, not a masterpiece (in my opinion) but well worth the time to watch.

4*

The way in which Robert Zemeckis seamlessly transitions the scenes in the fictional Marwen into scenes in the real world and back again shows that he still has the 'magic touch' that he showed in Forrest Gump (1994). Marwen is a fictional village in Belgium that Mark Hogancamp [Steve Carrell] built in miniature in his garden. Mark earned his living as a cartoonist of a WWII comic, but after becoming a victim of a hate crime, he is no longer able to draw properly. That is why he now works out his own stories in the form of photographs using a number of puppets. One of them is Captain Hogie, his alter-ego, who is under siege day after day by Nazis who are shot dead every day by five women, each based on important women in Mark's life. But his greatest enemy is Wendy, the "Belgian witch", who has a major negative influence on his mental state. When Mark meets his new neighbor Nicol [Leslie Mann], it gives him hope for happiness, despite his own strange habits.

All the scenes in Marwen are masterpieces in themselves where you simply forget that we are looking at cartoon characters in a realistic background. Zemeckis treats a complex theme in a way that is understandable and respectful and gives the viewer a big smile as easily as a lump in the throat. Flawless acting, with an excellent Carrell and especially strong supporting work from Merritt Wever as Mark's best friend.

Oops, big miss. Have Zemeckis in high regard, the man has given us many beautiful things (Back to the Future, Cast Away, Roger Rabbit), but this is really one of his least. An uncomfortable concoction about an in principle very sad man who, after a shocking event, loses himself in a fantasy world which is then made beautifully visible, but otherwise lacks any coherence and conviction. Zemeckis himself also loses himself in an excess of irrelevant special effects and should have given the actors more space to give their characters cachet. Now Hogancamp (a solid Carell, but unfortunately no more than that) remains a very strange man with whom you just can't feel the well-deserved compassion. The fact that he spends a large part of the film shamelessly chasing an unattainable love doesn't help either, his burly closing plea in court is the well-known drop in the bucket, little charisma this character. Welcome to Marwen is an unbalanced chaos, leaning towards a real flop, at least a failing on the report of a highly acclaimed filmmaker.
