In 1993, after having sex with a girl, Cameron [Chloë Grace Moretz] is sent by her parents to a religious camp where Dr. Lydia Marsh [Jennifer Ehle] Reverend Rick [John Gallagher Jr.], her brother who has 'converted' to heterosexuality, try to cure young people of their homosexuality. Cameron does not feel guilty at all about her sexuality, but is finding it increasingly difficult to resist the intimidation and the climate in which 'conversion' is rewarded with the granting of privileges. Strong work by Moretz and Sasha Lane (as an initially stubborn fellow sufferer) in an entertaining psychological drama that, however, has few special revelations about the way in which religious communities try to cure/combat homosexuality.

The prejudice, the narrow-mindedness to the point of absolute crazy towards homosexuality is once again highlighted.

Worth following, but there are stronger films that highlight the phenomenon.

The injustice is of course always appealing and Chloë Grace Morets' performance is very convincing.

A tragic coming-of-age story inspired by the novel of the same name by Emily M. Danforth, which was adapted into a film by director Desiree Akhavan in her second feature film. It is one of the few films for Chloe Grace Moretz in which her acting really needs to be leaned on, but unfortunately she fails to be an engaging and/or fascinating figure. The screenplay brings a refreshing nuance to the story by not repeatedly and consistently portraying the opposition as bogeyman figures, but Akhavan breaks down that same nuance after some time by ultimately returning to the above argument. Moreover, the supporting roles of Jennifer Ehle and Sasha Lane are extremely caricatured and never feel like figures that actually exist. Conceptually, the film offers a disturbing look at some people's beliefs and the role of John Gallagher Jr. is extremely successful, but in the end the film delivers little stimulation (anymore), which means that after some time you have to fight against the clock. By the way, half an extra for Akhavan's raw, direct directing approach, which remains subtle enough for such a weighty subject.
